Gymnastics

Kellam’s Sofia Catlin registered scores of 9.3 or higher in all four events to win the Virginia High School League Individual Open all-around competition Saturday at Ocean Lakes High.

Catlin helped the Knights finish second in Friday’s team competition.

On Saturday, Catlin scored 9.55 on the balance beam, 9.325 in floor exercise and bars and 9.3 on vault to finish with a 37.5 all-around score.

Grassfield’s Reagan Davis finished second at 37.175, followed by Kellam’s Avery Handlon (37.125).

Julia Lee, after helping Ocean Lakes win the program’s first team championship since 2020, finished first on bars with a 9.75 score. Catlin and Kellam’s Avery Handlon tied for second at 9.325.

Battlefield’s Ryan Grothhoff won the floor exercise with a 9.75, followed by Battlefield’s Jordan Ignacio (9.725), Lee (9.675) and Davis (9.575).

Colgan’s Natalya Shirley had the highest score on vault (9.675), and Kempsville’s Grace Wallace, Washington-Liberty’s Alana Johnson and Rock Ridge’s Thandi Hart tied at 9.65.

On beam, Glen Allen’s Laina Hawthorne was first (9.6), followed by Tallwood’s Isabella Edralin (9.575) and Catlin.

Jamestown’s Emma Liebler won the 100-yard butterfly and teamed with Louisa Lamerdin, Brooke Quinn and Addy Heyward to win the 200 freestyle relay as the Eagles finished second.

Monacan was first with 424 points, followed by Jamestown (326) and Blacksburg (299). Warhill placed seventh at 114.

Liebler also finished fourth in the 50 freestyle and was part of a second-place 400 free relay team along with Campbell Daniel, Holly Brundage and Heyward. Heyward (50 and 100 freestyle) and Brundage (100 backstroke) contributed third-place individual finishes.
Brundage, Quinn, Daniel and Lamerdin were second in the 200 medley relay.
