Ocean Lakes returned to the top of the Virginia High School League gymnastics podium on Friday, winning the Class 5 team championship on the team’s home floor.
The Dolphins won the Class 6 crown in 2020 and finished second in 2021 and 2019.
On Friday, Ocean Lakes finished with a team total of 145.675 to top Kellam (143.575), Woodgrove (140.925), Douglas Freeman (136.65) and Stone Bridge (135.475).
Julia Lee led the Dolphins with the day’s best score in three events: bars (9.7) vault (9.375) and floor exercise (9.45).
Kellam’s Sofia Catlin scored 9.725 on the balance beam to lead all competitors, followed by Lee at 9.4.
Ocean Lakes, coached by Jennifer Ramey, also had scores of 9-plus from Arianna O’Brien (9.325 in vault); Katie Wilkinson (9.175 in vault, 9.2 on beam, 9.075 on floor), Yasmin Williams (9.050 in vault, 9.275 on beam) and Sierra Edney (9.05 on beam).
Kellam’s Avery Handlon finished with 9.25 in vault, 9.15 on bars and 9.075 on beam, while teammates Alexis McCue (9.3) and Rebecca Garza (9.025) scored over 9.0 on beam. Catlin scored 9.225 on bars and 9.375 on floor.
Team scoring is determined by taking the total of the best four individual scores in each event. Teams are permitted to have five competitors in each event.
The VHSL gymnastics championships continue Saturday at Ocean Lakes with the Individual Open competition at 11 a.m.
Swimming and diving
Alyssa White and Izzie Check won two individual events and were part of two winning relay teams as Bruton turned in a dominating performance to win the Class 2 championship on Thursday night at SwimRVA in Richmond.
White was first in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 freestyle, while Check won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
The Panthers finished with 359.5 points, followed by Radford (299), Nandua (200) and Strasburg (170.5). Poquoson finished seventh at 105.
Bruton’s Maddie Hubbard won the 500 freestyle and Peyton Cleary was second in the 50 freestyle.
The Panthers also had victories in the 200-yard medley relay (Scarlett Miller, Check, Hubbard and Dori Veith), 200 freestyle relay (Cleary, Veith, Miller and White) and 400 freestyle relay (White, Hubbard, Check and Cleary).
Glenvar won the boys title with 238 points ahead of Poqouson (175) and Radford (161). Bruton was sixth (154).
Bruton’s Zach Hubbard won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Poqouson’s Tony DeVries was first in the 100 freestyle and teamed with Dylan Robinson, Owens Landon and Jack Sebring to win the 400 freestyle relay.
