In Chesapeake, voters will elect three City Council members, four school board members and the mayor in the November general election.
The deadline to file for the Nov. 5 election was June 18.
Nine candidates will compete for three at-large open seats on council. The three top vote-getters will be elected. Candidates include council incumbents Robert C. Ike Jr. and S. Z. “Debbie” Ritter, with challenges from Les Smith Jr., E. R. “Jeff” Jefferies Jr., Eric V. Wray II, Patricia Y. “Pat” King, Jeff B. Staples, Reagan A. Davis and Jennifer P. Naperala.
Mayor Richard W. “Rick” West and City Council member Don J. Carey III will face off for a four-year term as mayor.
A total of four at-large seats are up for grabs on the school board. Of the 10 candidates, four are incumbents: Chair Angie B. Swygert, Vice Chair Thomas L. Mercer Sr., Sam L. Boone Jr. and Norman G. Pool. Challengers will include Malia L. Huddle, Gregory G. Dono, Elijah Colon, Daniel A. Stahler, Rue M. Willis and L. Jameel Shaheer.
The races are nonpartisan.
A referendum could be on the ballot in Chesapeake as well. The sitting City Council expects to revisit a discussion in July about a referendum that would poll voters on implementing a fee to restore the city’s previous curbside recycling services.
