Potentially harmful bacteria found in beach waters of Captain’s Quarters in Ocean View https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/23/potentially-harmful-bacteria-found-in-beach-waters-of-captains-quarters-in-ocean-view/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 19:12:11 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7266269 Norfolk health officials on Tuesday issued a swimming advisory for Captain’s Quarters Park in Ocean View after finding bacteria suggesting the presence of fecal matter in the water.

The Norfolk Department of Public Health tested the water off the Captain’s Quarters beach, which is in the eastern part of Willoughby Bay, Monday and found elevated levels of enterococci bacteria that exceeded the state’s water quality standards. Enterococci is an indicator of fecal contamination, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Signs have been posted in the area of the contamination to alert the public, according to the Virginia Department of Public Health. The signs will be removed when the bacteria decreases to a safe level.

“While enterococci bacteria do not generally cause illness, scientific studies indicate that their presence is closely correlated to the presence of other disease-causing organisms,” the NDPH said in a news release. “People swimming or playing in waters with bacteria levels higher than the state standards have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness.”

Norfolk health officials will be collecting samples of local waterways throughout the swimming season which ends in mid-September.

Beginning July 19, 2024, construction crews will implement a traffic shift on Mallory Street Bridge. Eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic will be shifted from the existing west side of the bridge to the newly constructed east side of the bridge. (Provided by the Virginia Department of Transportation)

Traffic on Interstate 64 will be diverted onto the new segment of the Mallory Street Bridge in Hampton starting Friday as part of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project.

The new traffic pattern for eastbound and westbound traffic on the Mallory Street Bridge will begin at 7 p.m. Friday. This change marks the end of the first phase of the reconstruction of the bridge to accommodate the ongoing widening of the HRBT.

Switching to this new segment will allow traffic to continue while crews demolish the rest of the old bridge and rebuild it, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. VDOT has not provided a timeline for completion of the new segment.

Emergency vehicles’ access to the VA Medical Center and Hampton University will not be impacted by the construction, according to VDOT.

NASA Langley director moves on to new role after 5 years https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/17/nasa-langley-director-moves-on-to-new-role-after-5-years/ Wed, 17 Jul 2024 11:39:07 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7259348 There will be new leadership at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, according to a news release.

Clayton Turner, who took over as director of the Langley Research Center in September 2019, has been named the acting associate administrator for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate, or STMD.

Turner will replace Dr. Kurt Vogel, who is retiring from NASA after 30 years in government and who headed the STMD since January. Turner’s role at Langley will be filled by Dawn Shaible, who was previously deputy director of the NASA Glenn Research Center.

While these changes go into effect immediately, Turner’s and Shaible’s new assignments are temporary, according to a release. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson announced the position changes Tuesday, and thanked Vogel for his service.

“Our Space Technology Mission Directorate and Langley Research Center are in good hands with Clayton and Dawn, and I look forward to continuing to work with them as we lead NASA into the future,” Nelson said.

STMD “develops technologies through a community of entrepreneurs, researchers, and innovators to solve the nation’s toughest challenges and enable future NASA and commercial missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond,” according to NASA’s website.

Turner has worked at NASA for more than 30 years. His roles at Langley include engineering director, associate director and deputy director. He’s worked on a wide range of projects including the Space Shuttle program’s Return to Flight work, the flight test of the Ares 1-X rocket, the flight test of the Orion Launch Abort System and the entry, descent, and landing segment of the Mars Science Laboratory.

After 37 years with NASA, Schaible will be leading the 3,000 scientists, researchers and engineers at Langley. She was the director of engineering at Langley prior to taking over as deputy director of the Glenn Research Center in February 2023 and has been a leader in several programs at NASA including the Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs.

Virginia Beach police officer accused of sexual assault while on duty https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/15/virginia-beach-police-officer-accused-of-sexual-assault-while-on-duty/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 22:24:59 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7257762 A Virginia Beach police officer was indicted on Monday by a grand jury on three felonies stemming from a sexual assault he is accused of committing while on duty last month.

The Virginia Beach Police Department received a complaint June 14 about the actions of Sean A. Fearon, who has been with the department since 2022. Fearon was “acting in his official capacity as a sworn police officer” at the time of the alleged assault, according to a news release.

He is charged with object sexual penetration, abduction and destruction of evidence. No further details about his actions have been made public as of Monday evening.

Fearon’s police powers have been suspended and has been placed on administrative leave, according to the department.

After receiving the complaint, the Detective Bureau launched an investigation and submitted its findings to the Chesapeake Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, which then convened the grand jury.

Police Chief Paul Neudigate said Fearon’s actions are “not reflective of the 800 sworn officers who protect and serve the City of Virginia Beach with honor and distinction every day.

“The Virginia Beach Police Department is equally as appalled as our community that one of our own faces allegations of criminal conduct arising from an on-duty interaction with a member of our public,” Neudigate said in a news release. “Such conduct is contrary to the values and standards we uphold as a department and a profession, and if true, there must be accountability.”
