The city ended its recycling contract with TFC Recycling ahead of schedule Thursday after residents’ recyclables sat on the curb for more than a month.
The cancellation of the contract, effective immediately, comes after the City Council voted in December to end the city’s free, curbside recycling — a move initially slated to go into effect July 1. The decision meant the city’s contract with TFC Recycling would expire at the end of June, with the company continuing to haul away residents’ recyclables until then.
There will be special pickups Saturday and Monday that will collect the recycling as if it were trash. Starting Tuesday, residents’ recycling bins will be collected as trash on the normal trash collection schedule, according to the city’s Recycling FAQ webpage.
“Due to the excessive amount of material which has been left uncollected by our former recycling vendor, additional crews and vehicles will be working extended days and hours to get caught up as quickly as possible,” the city wrote.
