Chesapeake’s Xander Goboy wins VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship by 4 shots

Xander Goboy of Chesapeake eagled the first hole and never looked back in shooting a 1-under 71 to post a four-stroke victory in the VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship on Wednesday at The Federal Club in Glen Allen.

Goboy, who will start his college career at North Carolina State later this summer, maintained at least a four-shot lead after the opening eagle and finished at 6-under 210 in the three-day tournament.

It was his first individual VSGA championship and earned him an exemption into the U.S. Junior Amateur, which will be held July 22-27 at Oakland Hills in Michigan.

Leesburg’s Vaughn McMeans, who is headed to George Mason, finished second at 2-under 214.

Yorktown’s Brandon Sipe tied for sixth and Williamsburg’s Ryan Leach tied for ninth.

Hokies land standout in football, baseball

Micah Matthews, a four-star wide receiver and top-100 baseball recruit from Bridgewater, announced Wednesday night on social media that he has committed to Virginia Tech for 2025 and plans to play both sports.

Matthews (6-2, 205) chose the Hokies over Virginia and North Carolina among other schools.

The Turner Ashby High standout is ranked No. 5 in the state by 247Sports and ESPN in football and 112th overall in the country by 247Sports. In baseball, he’s ranked No. 43 in the country by Draft Analyst and No. 54 by Baseball America.

He plays outfield and third base in high school.

757 to host two CAA title events

The Coastal Athletic Association will return to Hampton Roads to host its indoor track and field and swimming and diving championships for the 2024-25 season.

The Virginia Beach Sports Center will be the site of the CAA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 26-27. The venue will also host the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships next year on March 14-15.

The Hampton Aquaplex will host the CAA Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships for the third straight year. This season’s event will be held Feb. 26-March 1.

Catholic’s Eleby commits to JMU

Catholic High power forward Jemma Eleby has committed to James Madison to play women’s basketball in 2025, she announced on social media.

The 6-2 Eleby scored more than 1,000 points in her high school career and averaged in double figures in points and rebounds last season.

  • The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team will open play in the Fort Myers Tip-Off against Michigan at 6 p.m. on Nov. 25.
  • Christopher Newport men’s soccer players Kyle Stenzel and Mason Field earned College Division All-State honors from the Virginia Sports Information Directors on Wednesday. Stenzel made the first team, while Field was on the second team.
  • Christopher Newport placed 53.6% of its athletes on the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. It marked the sixth straight year that more than half of the Captains’ athletes earned the academic honor.
  • The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team revealed its 16-game fall schedule on Wednesday. The Hokies will play three exhibition matches — Aug. 10 at UNC Greensboro, Aug. 13 vs. West Virginia and Aug. 17 at Liberty — before opening the regular season Aug. 22 at home against North Florida.

FIELD HOCKEY

UVA trio shine at Junior Pan Am

University of Virginia field hockey players Jans Croon, Daniela Mendez-Trendler and Mia Abello have helped Team USA reach the semifinals of the Junior Pan American Championships in Surrey, British Columbia.

Mendez-Trendler had three goals and an assist, Abello had a goal and two assists and Croon had two goals to help the team post a 4-1 record so far.

The U.S. was set to face Chile in a semifinal Wednesday night. The top three finishers in the tournament earn a spot in the 2025 FIH Junior Hockey World Cup.

  • UVA announced its 2024 field hockey schedule on Wednesday. The Cavaliers will visit Liberty on Aug. 18 and host Richmond on Aug. 24 in exhibition matches. They will open their 16-game regular-season schedule Aug. 30 at Penn State.

GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

Jamestown’s Leach All-Tidewater pick

Jamestown forward Maddie Leach was a second-team All-Tidewater girls soccer selection.

She was inadvertently left off the list of second-team selections last week.

In June, Leach was named Class 4 Region A Player of the Year.
