The struggling pharmacy chain Rite Aid shuttered three more Hampton Roads locations this week while undergoing bankruptcy procedures, a spokesperson confirmed.
The following Rite Aid locations closed Wednesday, Catherine Carter said in an email:
- 1101 E. Little Creek Road, Norfolk
- 324 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach
- 1660 Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach
Rite Aid has closed dozens of locations across the country, including at least 23 in Hampton Roads, in what leaders say is an effort to reduce expenses and increase financial performance.
The closures leave cities such as Smithfield and Williamsburg without any Rite Aid locations, according to the company website.
Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections in October amid an opioid-related lawsuit and financial distress, according to Associated Press reporting. The process allows the company to speed up the closure of underperforming stores.
The company is transferring prescriptions from closing stores to other pharmacies, Rite Aid CEO Jeffrey Stein said in an October letter to customers.
Rite Aid has not made or confirmed any decisions on additional store closures as part of the restructuring process, the spokesperson said.
