The Wellness and Prevention Services Unit of the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services will host a free discussion about marijuana use this Saturday.
“A Conversation About Cannabis” will clarify Virginia law following the limited legalization of marijuana for adults 21 and older on July 1, 2021, as well as go over “myths and facts” about responsible use and safe storage and tips for adults on how to approach the subject with teenagers.
“It’s really to just empower Virginia Beach residents so that they are able to make informed decisions to improve on their overall health and well-being,” said Vivian Alibah, an educator with the department.
Registration is required to attend the free event, and lunch will be provided. It will include speakers from the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority, the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute and the Life Change Institute.
Experts will be available to address questions about legal and chemical differences between tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC and the primary cause of the “high” feeling associated with marijuana, and cannabidiol, known as CBD.
“There seems to be a lot more questions than answers when we bring up the subject of marijuana, so we just want to clarify,” said Dennis Southers, the prevention team supervisor.
In particular, organizers want to stress the importance of not driving under the influence of marijuana.
“We want a healthy Virginia Beach, and we feel when people are more informed and educated, they’re able to make better decisions,” he said.
