MOYOCK — The man whose body was found in a field in Currituck County in March after being reported missing has been identified as Scott Brauer.

Capt. Kevin McCord of the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office released the man’s name and said he “died from a medical situation.”

According to an online obituary, Brauer was 61 on March 2 when he died. He was a Navy veteran, according to his obituary, serving 20 years as a gunner’s mate. He retired as a first-class petty officer in 2004.

He had owned a home in the 200 block of Sunny Lake Road in Moyock since 2023, according to Currituck County GIS records.

Deputies responded to a 7:40 a.m. call on March 2 to Sunny Lake Road for a report of a missing person, according to a Facebook post from the Sheriff’s Office.

The missing person hadn’t returned home, “had a medical issue that required prescribed medication twice a day,” and “he may be in serious need” of medical help, the post said.

After pinging his phone, which showed he was in the area near his house, “deputies located a suspicious object in the field several hundred yards behind the residence,” according to the post. “The missing individual was located deceased in a large field just north of the Eagle Creek subdivision.”

The medical examiner and detectives “arrived and processed the scene,” but there “appears to be no criminal intent at this time,” the Sheriff’s Office said at the time.

McCord on Tuesday said there was nothing suspicious about Brauer’s death.
