The person who died in Monday’s crash on the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel has been identified as a 55-year-old Hampton man.

Virginia State Police received a report at about 6:58 a.m. of a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 664 southbound near the MMMBT, which resulted in one vehicle falling into the water.

Investigators said a 2011 Chevy Traverse was traveling in the right lane of Interstate 664 south when it tried to change lanes and hit a 2005 Dodge Durango that was in the left lane. This caused the Traverse to spin and go over the wall of the bridge, according to state police.

The Traverse was recovered from the water by about 2:32 p.m. Monday. The driver, Daniel Irizarry, who had addresses in both Hampton and Orlando, Florida, was killed in the crash. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The MMMBT did not sustain structural damage, according to state police.
