An 18-year-old died in Nags Head Wednesday after officials say he and two other swimmers were in distress in the ocean.
Officials say emergency services were dispatched to the Gull Street public beach access in the 7100 block of South Virginia Dare Trail after reports of the swimmers were called in. Two swimmers returned to the shore, and officials said one of them had been helped by a Nags Head lifeguard. They were transported to the hospital.
An officer with the Nags Head Police Department deployed a drone and found the third swimmer. Lifeguards brought the 18-year-old to the shore and was transported to the hospital, but officials said he was pronounced dead on arrival.
At this time, his name has not been released by the town.
