Old Dominion linebacker Jason Henderson has been named a Walter Camp first-team preseason All-American for the second straight year.

The senior from Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania, led the country with 14.2 tackles per game and was third with 19.5 tackles for loss last season. He has 356 tackles over the past two seasons, which is the most in the country.

Last year, Henderson became the first Monarchs player to be named an FBS All-American twice. Five outlets — Walter Camp, The Sporting News, Action Network, College Football News and Hero Sports Group of Five — made him a first-team selection. Seven more outlets gave him second-team honors: FWAA, AP, USA Today, ESPN, CBS Sports, Phil Steele and The Athletic.

Ex-UVA stars win at Wimbledon

Former University of Virginia star Emma Navarro posted arguably the biggest victory of her professional career by sweeping four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka of Japan 6-4, 6-1 in a second-round match at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Navarro, seeded 19th, won an NCAA singles title with the Cavaliers in 2021.

Meanwhile, another former UVA star, Danielle Collins, defeated Denmark’s Clara Tauson 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in the completion of a suspended first-round match. Collins, seeded 11th, won two NCAA singles titles while with the Cavaliers from 2012-16.

Former Old Dominion star Yuliia Starodubtseva, competing for Ukraine, lost to New Zealand’s Lulu Sun 6-4, 3-6, 2-6 in the second round.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

NSU’s Vickers to receive Rodman Award

Norfolk State women’s basketball coach Larry Vickers will receive the J. Roy Rodman Memorial Award as Virginia’s outstanding collegiate coach from the Norfolk State Sports Club next month.

The honor will be given at the 77th Annual Jamboree, which will be held Aug. 8 at Chartway Arena in Norfolk.

Vickers guided the Spartans to their winningest Division I season at 27-6 overall. They earned MEAC regular-season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

COLLEGE SWIMMING

UVA’s Walsh gains top ACC honor

University of Virginia swimmer Gretchen Walsh has been named the ACC’s Mary Garber Award winner, which goes to the league’s female student-athlete of the year.

She becomes the third Cavalier to win the award, joining women’s basketball star Dawn Staley (1991 and 1992) and women’s soccer player Morgan Brian (2015).

Walsh, a Nashville, Tennessee, native, has earned a spot on the U.S. team in next month’s Olympics in Paris.

W&M teams collect scholar awards

William & Mary’s men’s and women’s swimming teams earned Scholar All-America Team recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, and an individual on each squad also picked up honors.

Aiden Bond of the Tribe men’s team and Sophia Heilen of the women’s team each made the Scholar All-America second team.

Meanwhile, Old Dominion’s Bryce Mortimer also made the Scholar All-America second team.

BASEBALL

VT alum makes Futures roster

Former Virginia Tech outfielder Gavin Cross has been selected to play in the MLB All-Star Futures Game, which will be held July 13 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Cross was the No. 9 overall pick of the Kansas City Royals in the 2022 MLB Draft. He has spent this season with the team’s Double-A affiliate, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. He’s hitting .274 with eight homers, 39 RBIs and a .788 OPS in 62 games this season.

In three seasons with the Hokies, Cross batted .340. He helped Virginia Tech reach the Super Regionals in 2022.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ex-Hokie to play in Olympics

Former Virginia Tech guard Sami Hill has been named to Canada’s Olympic roster for the Paris Games next month.

It will be her first Olympics appearance.

Hill, a Toronto native, played for the Hokies from 2013-17. She averaged 10.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists her senior season.

Canada will open play against host France in a Group B matchup on July 29.

  • The Old Dominion women’s soccer team will host George Washington in an exhibition game at 1 p.m. on Aug. 11 and open its 18-game regular season at home against VCU at 7 p.m. on Aug. 15.
  • UVA soccer goalkeeper Victoria Safradin has been named to the Croatian Women’s National Team roster. The team will compete in European Championship qualification matches against Wales on July 12 and Ukraine on July 16.
  • Roanoke’s Kathryn Ha shot a 2-over 73 to post a three-shot victory at the 55th VSGA Junior Girls’ Championship on Wednesday at James River Country Club in Newport News. Lilly Hall of Yorktown was sixth.
