NORFOLK — A police officer and a suspect were injured Saturday after the suspect opened fire on officers assisting with a Child Protective Services investigation in the Ingleside neighborhood, according to police.
The officers had been asked to accompany CPS workers at a home in the 3800 block of Arcadia Street around 3:20 p.m., police spokeswoman Joy Lipieko said. When they arrived, a woman became combative and a man then began firing at them, Lipieko said.
Police returned fire and the man was critically injured, Lipieko said. He remained hospitalized Saturday night. One officer was shot multiple times, but was listed in good condition afterward. The child that was the subject of the call was safe, Lipieko said.
“Today’s shooting is yet another reminder of the dangers that exist in the work that Norfolk Police officers do each day to keep the city and its residents safe,” Police Chief Mark Talbot said in a statement. “This afternoon officers were called upon to resolve a volatile situation that escalated quickly despite significant steps taken by officers to de-escalate.”
Virginia State Police are assisting with the investigation. Anyone who was in the 3800 block of Arcadia Street at the time of the shooting, and may have information that would assist investigators, is asked to contact the Norfolk Crime Line or State Police. All involved officers will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
