The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a man who went into the water near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on Thursday.

The search for the man began Thursday just after 12:30 p.m. after watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Virginia received a report of a missing swimmer. He had been last seen entering the water without a life jacket, and he drifted away from his pleasure vessel off Buckroe Beach in Hampton.

The Coast Guard deployed a 45-foot response boat crew from its Portsmouth station and a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City to search the area. During the search, waves were between one to three feet and wind reached 10 mph. Rescue crews covered an area of more than 700 square miles, and several regional teams joined the search, including ones from Hampton, Norfolk, Poquoson and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.
