Old Dominion linebacker Jason Henderson was among 75 players named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list on Tuesday.

The award is presented to the top defensive player in the country chosen by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

Henderson, a two-time All-American, led the country in tackles per game the past two seasons. He finished with 14.2 stops per game last season and 170 total tackles.

Virginia Tech defensive tackle Aeneas Peeples, Virginia safety Jonas Sanker, Liberty linebacker CJ Bazile and safety Brylan Green and East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel also made the list.

Two W&M stars on Payton list

William & Mary left tackle Charles Grant, a former Churchland High star, and running back Bronson Yoder are among 35 players who have been named to the Walter Payton Award preseason watch list.

The award is presented to the FCS national offensive player of the year. Known as the Heisman of the FCS, it is named for legendary running back Walter Payton, who starred at Jackson State as part of his Hall of Fame career.

Richmond wide receiver Nick DeGennaro also made the list.

Grant, who enters his fourth season as a starter, was one of only three offensive linemen to make the list. He ranked as the CAA’s top tackle in pass blocking efficiency last season and allowed just one sack on 334 pass-blocking snaps.

Yoder enters his final season ranked among the Tribe’s career top-10 lists in rushing yards (2,660, eighth), rushing touchdowns (25, eighth) and all-purpose yards (4,322, fifth).

DeGennaro led the Spiders with 71 receptions for 904 yards and tied a program record with 11 touchdown catches last season.

Liberty center makes Outland list

Liberty center Jordan White has been named to the Outland Trophy preseason watch list.

The award is presented to the top interior linemen in college football.

White, a native of Largo, Maryland, and a transfer from West Virginia, was an All-Conference USA first-team selection last season and helped the Flames finish No. 1 in the country in rushing offense (293.3 yards per game).

  • Cardinal Gibbons High (North Carolina) offensive tackle Jack Sheehan (6-6, 310) announced Tuesday on social media that he has committed to Old Dominion.

Norfolk State brings deep linebacker room into 2024 season with veterans and transfers https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/30/norfolk-state-brings-deep-linebacker-room-into-2024-season-with-veterans-and-transfers/ Tue, 30 Jul 2024 17:59:32 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7274885 NORFOLK — Norfolk State continued its progression into fall camp on Tuesday. Now that the Spartans are a week into practice, head coach Dawson Odums said his team is entering the “hardest” week of camp.

“We’ve had some good days,” Odums said. “Guys are retaining information. This is the hardest week. That second week — pushing through, challenging themselves physically and mentally. But we’ve got a good spirit about ourselves. A lot of guys have been through this and have an understanding of how to prepare (and are) getting those younger guys up to speed with it. The tough camp is always your first camp. We’re here to schedule, we’re doing things the right way.”

After giving Norfolk State’s first practice a “B” grade last week, Odums said the Spartans are still hovering around that grade this week. He added the Spartans’ energy levels weren’t where they needed to be Tuesday, but execution-wise his team was trending in the right direction.

“There are some ebbs and flows to our energy levels,” Odums said. “That’s what we gotta get out of. We got to be excited. It’s tough during camp, but we got to be excited to be out here with a chance to get better.”

Slight position change for All-MEAC defender

Media members have been permitted to watch the last hour of two practices so far during fall camp. In both practices, redshirt junior linebacker Daylan Long could be seen working with the safeties.

Odums and defensive coordinator Steve Adams confirmed Tuesday that Long will be playing nickel for the Spartans this year.

“This is where he should have probably been at least last year,” Adams said. “But because of necessity, because when his brother (former NSU linebacker Tyler Long) transferred, we had to keep him there. We didn’t have any experienced linebackers because behind there were a bunch of freshmen.”

Daylan Long (7) runs through drills during practice at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia, on July 30, 2024. (Billy Schuerman / The Virginian-Pilot)

Long was named to the All-MEAC second team last year as a linebacker, starting 10 games and recording 41 tackles and three sacks. Of the 422 snaps he played on defense last year, 359 came playing in the box, while just 34 came in the slot corner position, according to Pro Football Focus. Long, who transferred to Norfolk State from Miami (Ohio) in 2022, has embraced the position change so far.

“My freshman year (at Miami), I was supposed to play that position anyway,” Long said. “But they needed me at the Will linebacker position. Then when I came here, they needed me at the Will linebacker position, too. So I just did what the team needed me to do. Now I’m doing what I wanted to do.”

Long said his skillset, specifically his speed, has made the transition to playing nickel natural thus far.

“He plays so aggressive,” Adams said. “When he sees that ball, his job is to trigger, and he’s going to trigger, and he’s going to fit fast. He’s just an instinctive player in that way. But then certainly, he can help us in space. … He just plays it at a different speed and he’s feeling really, really comfortable.”

Spartans sport deep linebacker room

Norfolk State’s linebacker room is one of the several position groups benefiting from increased experience in 2024.

According to Pro Football Focus, the Spartans had five linebackers log a total of 1,381 snaps in 2023. This year, Norfolk State returns all but one of those players and adds a few transfers, giving Adams plenty of cause for excitement about his defense.

“We didn’t lose one starter to the transfer portal,” Adams said. “We lost three seniors to graduation and then as a whole team, we lost five. … They’re buying into the process and we’re finally getting the roster and the locker room where it needs to be. In this game, it ain’t so much X’s and O’s, it’s the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s.”

Sophomore AJ Richardson played the most of any linebacker on the roster last year. As a true freshman, he led the team with 69 tackles and 11 tackles for loss, landing him in the top three of the MEAC in both categories. Richardson said he’s feeling confident about his development heading into year two as well as the depth the linebacker room will have this season.

“Experience is the best teacher,” Richardson said. “So with us being experienced, we’re gonna have a lot of guys that’s on the field that have played before and have been in those tough moments and know what to do.”

Richardson was an All-MEAC player last year and also earned FCS Freshman All-American honors. Long said Richardson “exceeded” his role last year and is so talented, he “has no ceiling.”

“He’s developed his body, he’s developed his mind and he’s developed his leadership,” Odums said. “So he’s gotten better in all areas. As long as he keeps doing that, we’re gonna be a good football team.”

Pilots swept in CPL playoffs

A memorable Peninsula Pilots season ended Monday night in a frustrating playoff exit as the host Wilmington Sharks completed a two-game East Division final sweep with a 4-2 victory before 1,100 fans in southeastern North Carolina.

The Pilots came into the Coastal Plain League’s Petitt Cup playoffs with a league-best 34-13 record and were the East’s best in both halves of the season, but they had just three hits — all singles — in both of their postseason games.

Wilmington (26-19 in the regular season) advanced to the best-of-three CPL championship series against the West Division series victor, either Lexington County or Forest City.

Peninsula drew eight walks Monday but struck out 15 times against five Wilmington pitchers. Six of those bases on balls were issued by winner Nick Boyle, who struck out seven in 1/3 innings. Thomas Paxton and Greyson Linderman combined to strike out five without allowing a hit in the final two innings.

Pilots starter Brian Ereu took the loss, giving up four runs — two earned — and four hits in four innings.

Cam Hassert scored on a balk in the second inning, and Cam Suto clubbed a two-run homer in the third for a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Pilots’ Kyle Edwards walked, advanced on two wild pitches and scored on Trey Morgan’s sacrifice fly. The Sharks answered back in the bottom of the fifth as Drew Sturgeon walked and came home on Dylan Jeffries’ double.

Jevin Relaford’s single brought home Carlos Pena in the seventh to make the score 4-2, but reliever Billy Hoffacker struck out Grayson Fitzwater, one of the CPL’s top players, with runners on second and third to end the inning.

Former ODU star Taylor Heinicke sees ‘the writing on the wall’ as Falcons’ backup QB https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/29/former-odu-star-taylor-heinicke-sees-the-writing-on-the-wall-as-falcons-backup-qb/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 13:47:41 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7272864 FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who took a pay cut to return to the Atlanta Falcons, believes his days with the team are numbered.

Heinicke, a former Old Dominion University record-setter, is backing up Kirk Cousins, who was acquired in free agency, and Michael Penix Jr., the eighth overall pick in the draft. Cousins was medically cleared from his Achilles surgery, and Penix has flashed his big arm and accuracy early in training camp.

“Yeah, I kind of see the writing on the wall,” Heinicke said when asked about his role on the team after open practice Saturday night in Buford, Georgia, at Seckinger High, about 10 miles away from where he attended high school at Collins Hill. “It’s nothing that I haven’t been through before, so I accept my role in any case. My role, for me, and what I think is to help Kirk any way that I can. If he has any questions. Same thing with Mike. Sometimes the game is fast. Sometimes everything is fast for rookies.”

The Falcons also have rookie John Paddock on the roster. They don’t plan to play Cousins in the exhibition season, so Penix, Heinicke and Paddock have availability for the three games.

“I’m going to make sure that I’m on top of my stuff so that when (Cousins) does have that question, I can give him the right answer to kind of help him through it,” Heinicke said.

Heinicke, who was lightly recruited out of high school, went on to break most of ODU’s passing records. He came up the hard side of the NFL mountain as an undrafted free agent but has carved out a nice career with Minnesota, New England, Houston, Carolina and Washington.

He’s played in 38 games and made 29 starts in the regular season. He also started a playoff game for Washington after the 2020 season.

Heinicke signed with the Falcons on March 14, 2023. He served as Desmond Ridder’s backup and was eventually installed as a starter. Heinicke played in five games and went 1-3 as a starter.

“I went through this in Minnesota,” said Heinicke, who has 45 transactions listed on his profootballreference.com profile. “I went through this in Carolina. It’s one of the things where I can’t control it. Only thing I can control is how I am as a teammate and as person.”

The Falcons are likely to keep two quarterbacks and have another on the practice squad. Heinicke can count to three and is being realistic about his plight.

“So when I come in the building, I’m going to be a great teammate,” Heinicke said. “I’m going to do everything I can to be on this team and help them in every way that I can. That’s my role. I gladly accept that. I’m trying to be the best at that.”

Heinicke enjoys working with Cousins.

“I’ve learned so much from Kirk, from offseason until now,” Heinicke said. “Just the way he goes about his business, the way he approaches every meeting, every practice, it’s really cool to see.

“I wish I’d met him earlier in my career. That’s not a knock on anyone else that I’ve worked with, it’s just that I correlate with him and how he approaches things. Again, it’s a new offense for him a little bit. There are couple of nuances from last year. Motions, shifts and things like that.”

The offense is looking drastically different from how the Falcons attacked teams with a powerful running game under former coach Arthur Smith.

“You’ll see it on Sundays, it’s a totally different offense,” Heinicke said. “I think last year, we had a great offensive line and we liked to pound the rock. We had (running backs) Cordarrelle (Patterson), Tyler (Allgeier) and Bijan (Robinson). This year, a little bit more spread out. Lots of motions. You’ll see a lot of people get the ball. So it’s a really fun offense to be a part of. I think we’re all excited to see what happens on Sundays.”

Game 2 is set for Monday night on the Sharks’ field in southeastern North Carolina. A Peninsula win would force Game 3 at 7 p.m. Tuesday back at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, where the playoff opener drew 2,213.

Most of them went home disappointed as Wilmington broke a 0-0 tie in the ninth inning to beat a Peninsula team that led the division in both halves of the regular season.

Starting pitchers Sam Rochard of the Pilots and Travis Lavendier of the Sharks dueled for most of the game. Rochard, a Warhill High graduate who pitched for Tennessee Wesleyan this year, gave up two hits and five walks in 6 2/3 innings. Lavendier, from Salem University in West Virginia, pitched six innings, yielding three hits and two walks while striking out three.

In the ninth, Wilmington’s Cam Suto drew a walk from reliever Cade Plummer, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Cam Hassert’s sacrifice bunt.

Pilots manager Hank Morgan brought in reliever Dalton Barham, who struck out Branton Jernigan but yielded a tiebreaking single to Mike Stellrecht.

Two more singles, by Jason Culley and Drew Sturgeon, brought home the second run.

Peninsula (34-13 in the regular season) had just three hits all night, singles by Trey Morgan, Jevin Relaford and Kyle Edwards. Relievers Cade Granzow, Thomas Paxton (the winning pitcher) and Greyson Linderman each threw a hitless inning to complete the shutout for the Sharks, who were 26-19 in the regular season.

Hall takes third after being spun

Hampton native Connor Hall took third place in a bizarre CARS Tour Late Model Stock 125 Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway in Newton, North Carolina.

Hall, the pole starter, was dueling Ryan Millington for the victory, and they had contact over the final laps. Late contact from behind put Hall into a spin as Millington crossed the finish line.

But officials penalized Millington for the contact and gave the victory to Ronnie Bassett Jr., who got his first win in the series after joining it full-time in 2023.

Bobby McCarty finished second. According to racingamerica.com, Hall was able to point his car in the proper direction to edge Kade Brown for third. That finish came on the heels of Hall’s runner-up finish to Brenden Queen in the previous Saturday’s Hampton Heat 200 at Langley Speedway.

“I thought we had the race won, but the fastest car doesn’t always win the race,” Hall, last year’s NASCAR Weekly Series national champion and current CARS Tour points leader, told racingamerica.com. “This is a tough one. That’s three in a row that have been pretty tough to swallow. We’re just going to keep putting ourselves in position to succeed, and hopefully one will fall our way pretty soon.”

They defeated the Asheville City SC Blues of North Carolina 1-0 Sunday night at Christopher Newport’s TowneBank Stadium to earn a berth in the USL League Two national championship match.

Friday, Seacoast United handed Lionsbridge FC a rare home loss, outscoring the Lions 6-3. Two days later, in a far different match at CNU, the Phantoms shut out an Asheville team that had beaten Corpus Christi FC of Texas 1-0.

The bright-yellow-clad Phantoms from Epping, New Hampshire, disappointed Lionsbridge’s latest large home crowd, ousting the Lions from the USL League Two playoffs with a wild 6-3 triumph Friday night in Newport News.

The game doubled as the Eastern Conference championship contest and a national quarterfinal. Seacoast (16-1), ranked second nationally according to the league website before the 35-team playoffs began, earned the right to return to Christopher Newport’s TowneBank Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Sunday for a semifinal against top-ranked Asheville City FC.

Lionsbridge (15-2-4 in all competitions) had been on a 15-match unbeaten streak. The Lions, national runners-up last season, made the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, the past three as Chesapeake Division champions.

Asheville’s Blues overcame No. 9 Corpus Christi SC of Texas 1-0 in Friday’s first match, the Southern Conference final. In the 35th minute, the Blues’ Niall Reid-Stephen made a crossing pass from the left side, and Izaiah Vignali volleyed it past the Sharks’ goalkeeper for the match’s only goal.

The second match brought way more excitement, but also frustration for Lionsbridge and its cadre of fans. Coach Chris Whalley’s Lions, ranked 10th before they won a pair of home playoff matches last weekend, hadn’t given up more than two goals in a match all season, but Seacoast tripled that total. Both teams recorded 11 shots.

Ibrahim Conde opened the scoring in the ninth minute. Lionsbridge’s Claudel N’goubou tied the score at 1 in the 23rd, finishing a passing sequence with Matthew Kirk.

Terry Makedika put the Phantoms ahead 2-1 in the 31st minute, only to see Jasper Winslow bring the hosts even at 2 by netting a long-distance goal from the right side in the 38th.

Zemedkun Rodriguez’s goal in the 42nd minute gave the Phantoms a 3-2 halftime edge, and Marco dos Santos made it 4-2 in the 56th.

Lionsbridge rallied once more, with Denis Krioutchenkov scoring off a Sam Hall assist in the 76th minute. But Seacoast ensured the victory with goals by Conde in the 78th and Taig Healy in the 82nd.

Thursday’s rain meant many players had to finish their second round Friday and then, if they made the 36-hole cut, complete their third. Sixty-three players, all at 5-over 145, made the cut.

Kinder completed a 70 in the second round and a 67 in the third. It looked like he would end the day alone in second place, but UNC Greensboro’s Branden Boyce double-bogeyed the par-5 18th hole to finish at 68 and fell into a tie with Kinder.

Bobby Dudeck, a former Jamestown High and Radford player, was third at 8 under after a 66, his best round of the event.

Great Bridge High 2024 graduate Trey Marrion, who soon will play for the University of Illinois, shot 68 in the third round. He shared fourth place at 7-under 203 with North Carolina State players Michael Vick and Cade McLaughlin.

The final round will start Saturday morning.

Pilots sweep doubleheader in regular-season home finale

The Peninsula Pilots closed their regular-season home schedule in fine fashion Friday night, pounding Tri-City 10-5, 14-2 in a doubleheader before 3,578 at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

The Pilots (34-12) will finish the regular season Saturday night at Morehead City before returning Sunday for Game 1 of a best-of-three Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup semifinal series against the Wilmington Sharks.

Peninsula won the East Division’s first-half title on the last possible day to clinch a playoff berth, then ran away with the second-half championship. The Sharks (26-18) have clinched the division’s second-best overall record and thus will face the Pilots.

In Game 1, Carlos Pena was 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs, Jevin Relaford was 2 for 4 and scored twice, Grayson Fitzwater scored three runs, and Henry Garcia was 2 for 4 with a run and three RBIs.

Seven Peninsula pitchers threw an inning apiece. Brian Ereu, Darrell Fletcher-Knight, Olvis Genao and Dylan Morrill shut out the Chili Peppers in their innings.

In Game 2, seven Pilots — Cole Koonce, Marcus Dux, Mitchell Wittkamp, Nate Varnier, Jacob Flicek, Gardner Meeks and Caden Plummer — combined to pitch a two-hitter and survived seven walks. Wittkamp, who struck out all three batters he faced, gained the victory.

The Chili Peppers (18-29) went ahead 1-0 in the first inning, but Peninsula went ahead to stay with a four-run second and took a 12-2 lead in the fifth.

The Pilots had 18 hits, including a home run by Fitzwater and a double by Trey Morgan, who was 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs. Relaford was 4 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs, Corbin Shaw was 4 for 5 with four RBIs and a run, Fitzwater and Jorsixt Jimenez each had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and Luis Delacruz was 2 for 2 with a run.
