Logan Reilly sank a 30-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole Sunday afternoon to win the State Open of Virginia at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian.
Reilly, who’s from Lovettsville in Northern Virginia and has committed to play golf for NCAA champion Auburn, shot a 4-under-par 67 Sunday to finish at 12-under 201. He won the playoff against four-time State Open champion Jay Woodson, who came from behind to fire a 62 Sunday, setting Independence’s competitive course record.
Reilly became just the second player in the merged State Open era (1985-present) to win both the VSGA Amateur and State Open of Virginia in the same year.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Reilly, a rising senior at Bishop O’Connell High, said on vsga.com. “If you would have told me that earlier in the year, I would have definitely taken it. It’s literally everything I could have asked for.”
Woodson, who carded four birdies and an eagle for a front-nine 30, is a two-time VSGA Amateur champion and James Madison Hall of Famer who has played pro golf. After growing up in Powhatan, he starred for the Dukes in the early 2000s.
Of the 62, he told vsga.com, “Did I think I had it in me? Sure, I thought I had it in me. Did I think it was going to happen? Definitely not. You just keep thinking and believing and you just kind of talk yourself into it.”
Brandon Berry, who played for Langley High in Great Falls and Loyola University Maryland, shot 69 Sunday for third place at 10 under, two strokes behind.
Lynchburg native Connor Burgess, a Virginia Tech product who has been on the Korn Ferry Tour; former Richmond Spiders standout Sam Beach and George Duangmanee, who gained All-America honorable mention in 2024 with the Virginia Cavaliers, tied for fourth at 9 under.
Robb Kinder, a former New Kent High and Christopher Newport star from Williamsburg Golf Club, tied for 14th at 3 under after his second 69 in a row. Churchland High graduate Jonathan McEwen, who plays for Washington and Lee, shared 20th place at 2 under after Sunday’s 66, his best round of the tourney.
Recent area high school graduates Ryan Leach (70 Sunday) and Trey Marrion (72), who soon will compete in Division I, shared 24th place at 1 under with Bobby Dudeck (73), who has played for Jamestown and Radford University.
Leach, also from Jamestown, is headed to West Virginia. Marrion, from Great Bridge, is going to Illinois.
