Parker’s walk-off homer in 10th gives Pilots second-half title

A long Saturday night for the Peninsula Pilots ended like the great majority this season — with a victory.

Darnell Parker clubbed a walk-off three-run homer in the 10th inning as the Pilots (31-11, 15-3 in the Coastal Plain League’s second half) overcame Martinsville 9-8 at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton. Much of the crowd of 1,762 endured a 45-minute weather delay before the Pilots clinched the East Division’s second-half title; they already had won the first half.

It was the second one-run victory by the Pilots over the Mustangs (27-14, 12-5) in two nights. Martinsville, which leads the West Division’s second half by a half-game over Lexington County, needs to win it join Peninsula and West first-half champ Forest City in the playoffs.

Peninsula will host Game 1 of a Petitt Cup semifinal series July 28 against the team that finishes second overall in the East. The Wilmington Sharks (26-17) lead the Wilson Tobs (23-18) by two games for that position.

CPL rules allow two automatic runners in every extra inning. Martinsville scored twice in the 10th, only to see Parker bring home himself, Henry Garcia and Kyle Edwards with his drive over the wall off a Mason Dear pitch. It capped Parker’s 2-for-2, two-run, five-RBI evening and gave Dalton Barham, who pitched three innings, a win.

Edwards was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.

Hayden Friese led Martinsville, singling twice in five at-bats and driving in four runs. Craig Kenny and Corey Adams scored twice apiece.

Sunday, the Pilots will face the Greenville Yard Gnomes in eastern North Carolina at 5:05 p.m.
