Scattered storms — some of which may turn severe — are possible Monday afternoon as a cold front approaches Hampton Roads, potentially causing problems for rush-hour travel.
Areas east of Williamsburg, including all of South Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore and northeastern North Carolina, face a slight risk of severe weather between 2 and 9 p.m., according the National Weather Service office in Wakefield. Areas west of Williamsburg are under a marginal risk.
The greatest threats are damaging wind gusts and large hail, and the weather service says an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out.
Rain chances increase to 23% by 1 p.m. in Norfolk and to 61% between 4 and 7 p.m. before tapering off into the night, according to NWS. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s today before cooling down after the front passes through. Tuesday’s highs are expected to be in the lower 80s.
