Region/state roundup: UVA picks up a pair of football commitments

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Calhoun County (South Carolina) High wide receiver Christian Zachary has committed to the University of Virginia, he announced Tuesday on Twitter.

Zachary, 6-3 and 190 pounds, is a three-star prospect, according to 247sports.com. He chose the Cavaliers over Duke, Charlotte and Appalachian State among others.

He has also played basketball and ran track at Calhoun County.

Meanwhile, offensive lineman Grant Ellinger, a three-star rising senior prospect from Naperville, Illinois, committed to Virginia on Monday night, he revealed on social media.

The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder visited the campus last weekend and picked the Cavaliers over Cincinnati, Kansas, Marshall, Coastal Carolina, Army, Colorado State, Central Michigan, Bowling Green and others, according to Charlottesville-area journalist Jerry Ratcliffe.

Hokies gain transfer offensive lineman

Virginia Tech added transfer offensive tackle Clayton Frady, a 6-foot-5, 290-pounder from Gardner-Webb who made the All-Big South first team. From Smoky Mountain High in Sylva, North Carolina, Frady will be the ninth addition to Tech’s 2023 roster from the transfer portal this offseason.

The Hokies also gained a commitment from rising senior safety Quentin Reddish, a 6-3, 185-pound, three-star prospect from Charlotte’s Independence High.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Sanchez returns to UVA staff

Former Virginia associate head coach Ron Sanchez is returning to the Cavaliers in the same role after spending the past five seasons as Charlotte’s head coach.

Sanchez went 72–78 at Charlotte, including 22–14 with a CBI championship last season.

He spent nine seasons on Bennett’s staff from 2009-18. He also was an assistant coach under Bennett for three seasons at Washington State from 2006-09.

Ex-Tribe player headed to ETSU

Former William & Mary guard Tyler Rice committed to East Tennessee State, according to the Verbal Commits website.

The 6-1, 183-pounder from Columbia, South Carolina, averaged 4.0 points, 0.8 rebounds and 11.9 minutes in 24 games for the Tribe (13-20), including four starts. He shot 27% (16 of 59) from beyond the arc and 33% (31 of 93) overall.

BASEBALL

O’s option Vavra to Norfolk

The Baltimore Orioles have optioned infielder/outfielder Terrin Vavra to the Norfolk Tides and reinstated left-hander Danny Coulombe from the bereavement list, the team announced Tuesday.

Vavra played 27 games for the Orioles and hit .245 with no homers and five RBIs this season. He played nine games for the Tides earlier this season, hitting .286, and 45 games last season.

Dodgers call up ex-JMU pitcher

The Los Angeles Dodgers called up former James Madison relief pitcher Nick Robertson on Tuesday.

The right-hander went 2-0 with a 2.13 ERA and seven saves with Triple-A Oklahoma City in 24 appearances this season.

* Old Dominion women’s tennis player Shahar Biran has been named the ITA Atlantic Region Most Improved Senior. She went 19-5 in singles play. On the men’s side, ODU’s Nicola Vidal was the Most Improved Senior, while teammate Cosme Rolland De Ravel earned Rookie of the Year honors. Vidal finished 14-9 in singles, while Rolland De Ravel went 25-10 in singles and 25-8 in doubles.

* Virginia tennis player Ryan Goetz has been named the ITA Atlantic Region Senior Player of the Year. UVA’s Andres Pedroso was also named the region’s Coach of the Year. Goetz helped lead the Cavaliers to their second straight NCAA championship and third straight ACC title, going 27-5 in singles.

* Christopher Newport lacrosse player Andrew Cook has been selected as the Region 3 Offensive Player of the Year. Five of his teammates joined him on the All-Region first team: Coby Auslander, Alex Brendes, Warner Cabaniss, Campbell Pozin and Ryan Young. CNU’s Zac Hanway made the second team.
