HAMPTON — At least one person is seriously injured after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 Monday afternoon.
Virginia State Police responded to the crash at 12:26 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-64 at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel in Hampton, according to state police.
A motorcyclist was taken to Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.
The crash had closed all travel lanes earlier in the afternoon, but they were all reopened as of 2:15 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Glen Williams, public information officer for Norfolk Fire-Rescue, said crews from Norfolk and Hampton responded to the crash. Williams said 15 cars were involved, and three people sustained injuries in the eastbound tunnel.
Drivers heading east were recently introduced to a new traffic pattern on May 2. As part of the HRBT expansion project, drivers headed east on I-64 are diverted to the new north trestle, just to the right of the existing trestle. Motorists are then redirected into the existing tunnel just before reaching the construction site for the new one.
It was not immediately clear how many vehicles were involved and no other information has been released. The crash is under investigation.
