UPDATED:

A 1-year-old was shot accidentally Tuesday afternoon by another child, Hampton police said in a news release.

The child was hospitalized with what police called injuries that are not life-threatening.

Police responded to reports of a shooting just after noon in the 100 block of Clyde Street, near Roads View and Chesapeake avenues. Officers determined another juvenile accidentally shot the infant with an unsecured firearm, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information to assist police is encouraged to contact the Hampton Police Division at 757–727–6111 or the Crime Line at 1–888-LOCK-U-UP.

Correction: A correction was made on May 29, 2024: Due to incorrect information provided to The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press, an earlier version of this article misstated the age of the child who was shot. The child is 1 year old, not 7 months old.
