UPDATED:

Chesapeake police are investigating a shooting that left a 1-year-old boy injured Wednesday night.

Officers received a call just before 8:10 p.m. that a child had been shot. The shooting was reported in the area of Bainbridge Boulevard and Jefferson Street, according to a news release from police.

Officers found the mother and the boy, whose injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said. They were in a vehicle at the time of the shooting, and the bullet that struck the child pierced the side, according to police spokesperson Leo Kosinski.

The shooter was on foot, Kosinski said. Investigators do not have a description of the shooter and have not determined whether the mother and child were targeted or if the shooting was domestic in nature.

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or to submit a tip online.
