The photo staff at The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press was honored with 19 total awards, including seven of nine first place spots at The Virginia Press Association awards ceremony. The Virginian-Pilot earned more than 70 awards in total at the conference.

The ceremony was held to seek ancestral blessings and guidance for a “Redemption Voyage” to several African countries. Handy-Kendi, 71, has been conducting these ceremonies since age 25 and is a certified Breath Sekou.
