Behind Brian Ereu’s 7 1/3 strong innings, the Peninsula Pilots posted a 4-1 victory Sunday night over the Wilmington Sharks before 2,984 at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

The Pilots (10-4), who lead the Coastal Plain League’s East Divisionby a half-game over Wilson, scored three runs in the first and one in the second, then made them stand up with a combined five-hitter.

The Pilots had won six games in a row before Saturday’s 5-3 loss at Holly Springs.

Ereu held the Sharks (8-5) to four hits, striking out three and walking one. Caden Plummer got the last two outs of the eighth, and Kenny Leiner pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for a save.

Grayson Fitzwater and Jorsixt Jimenez had RBI hits in the first off Wilmington starter Tyler Sickles, and Ty Swaim singled and scored in the second.

Cam Hassert doubled in the third inning and scored Wilmington’s run.

The Pilots were off Monday and will be back at War Memorial Stadium at 7 Tuesday night to face the Tri-City Chili Peppers.

VCU gains pledge from 6-10 player

Luke Bamgboye, a 6-foot-10, 190-pounder from Arizona Compass Prep, announced his commitment to the VCU Rams. He is from Essex, Maryland.

According to League Ready, a high school sports website, Bamgboye held scholarship offers from Iowa, Houston, Georgia Tech, California, Maryland, Miami, Central Florida, SMU and Towson. He is rated a 4-star prospect by 247 Sports.
