“Cat brings a wealth of experience that spans across multiple levels of the sport,” Hampton athletic director Anthony Henderson said in a school release. “As a player, she has a firsthand understanding of the game. … Her time as an assistant coach has provided her with a strong foundation in strategy, player development and game management. Moreover, her role as a head coach at both the collegiate and professional levels demonstrates her leadership abilities and ability to manage and build a successful program.”

Tarvin said in the release, “I am beyond excited to be coming to Hampton. It is a program that has a tradition of success. I’ve been a player, worked as a GA (graduate assistant), assistant and head coach, and have learned a lot over the years. I’m looking forward to using this knowledge to build the program.”

Hampton was 17-35 in 2024, 7-20 in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Pirates were 10th in the 12-team conference and didn’t qualify for its six-team tournament.

Tarvin is replacing Monique White, who resigned May 6 after her teams were 51-102 in three seasons.

In 2023, Tarvin led the Eagles to a 12-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season record and then guided them to the MEAC Tournament title on Norfolk State’s field. That gave N.C. Central its first NCAA Tournament bid.

In ’24, NCCU was 14-7 in the MEAC regular season and third in the conference tournament in Norfolk.

When Tarvin took over the Eagles, they hadn’t posted a winning record in 17 seasons and had been above .500 in the MEAC just twice in that span.

Tarvin, who grew up in Lawrenceville, Georgia, was a two-way player for Kennesaw State and then Presbyterian, from where she graduated in 2013. She was on the All-Big South second team as a utility player as a senior for the Blue Hose.

She is spending the summer as the head coach of the Texas Smoke, a Women’s Professional Fastpitch team.

Two state champion Fleet Park baseball teams from Norfolk aim for region championships https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/18/two-state-champion-fleet-park-baseball-teams-from-norfolk-aim-for-region-championships/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 18:29:22 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7261175 Fans of Norfolk-based Fleet Park baseball teams will have plenty to cheer this week, with two state champion squads about to compete in multi-state Southeast Region tournaments.

The Fleet Park Junior League team rules the state in age 12-14 baseball, and it won’t have to go too far — about a 3 1/2-hour drive to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley — for its region playoffs. Those boys left Wednesday and will play their first game Friday.

Fleet Park is in a modified double-elimination tournament with six other state champions, plus homestanding Bridgewater.

The Norfolk squad will open its stay with a 3 p.m. game Friday against Irmo, South Carolina, and will play Saturday at noon or 6 p.m.  against Martinsburg, West Virginia, or Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Those teams will square off at 6 p.m. Friday.

The other side of the bracket includes Bridgewater against Bartow County of Cartersville, Georgia, at 9 a.m. Friday and Dilworth of Charlotte, North Carolina, versus Keystone of Tampa, Florida, at noon Friday.

The tournament is scheduled to last through Tuesday, and its champion will gain a trip to the Junior League World Series in Taylor, Michigan, starting Aug. 4.

In the 16-team state tournament, outfielder Gabriel Rapisardi drove in a key run during a 6-5 victory over Huguenot. Jayden Williams escaped a bases-loaded, none-out jam with three consecutive strikeouts.

In the championship game, Elliott Rush needed just 74 pitches to work eight effective innings. Shortstop Trip Mukherjee was critical defensively, and slugger Jonathan Newton often reached base.

Travis Pfitzner, Martin Zarate, Chris Dial and Pravash Mukherjee II comprise the Junior coaching staff.

This is the second time in three years that Fleet Park has made significant strides. Its 2022 Senior League (16-and-under) squad was the overall runner-up in its World Series and won the United States championship.

Meanwhile, this Fleet Park Gold Senior team is in its eight-team region tournament in Safety Harbor, Florida. Aiden Longworth and Paul Green are among the standouts for the Senior squad, which also will play South Carolina champion Irmo. That game will be at 2:15 p.m. Friday.

Tommy Van Hoose, George Nicholls and Manu Molion are coaching the Senior squad.

The pairings for the Senior and Junior events are strikingly similar. Like the Fleet Park Junior team, the Senior squad will play its second game against a state champion from Tennessee (Lexington) or West Virginia (Logan). A victory Friday would put Fleet Park into an 11:45 a.m. contest Saturday, while a loss would mean a 5:30 p.m. start.

The Southeast Senior champ will go to its World Series, which will open July 27 in Easley, South Carolina.

This Week at Harbor Park: Nashville, with former Grassfield and Norfolk pitcher Garrett Stallings, will face Tides starting Friday https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/15/this-week-at-harbor-park-nashville-with-former-grassfield-and-norfolk-pitcher-garrett-stallings-will-face-tides-starting-friday/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 20:23:51 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7257597 Because of the MLB All-Star break, the Norfolk Tides won’t play another International League game until Friday. When they do, it will be to start a three-game series against the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Norfolk’s record: 44-48, 8-9 in the IL’s second half

New in town: Pitcher Colin Selby, from Randolph-Macon College and Chesapeake’s Western Branch High, was assigned to the Tides after being acquired from the Brewers by the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday for cash. He’ll be facing some of his former Nashville teammates. Selby has pitched 27 innings in the major leagues over the past two seasons with Pittsburgh and Kansas City. He has compiled an 8.67 ERA with 30 strikeouts in the majors and spent most of this season in Triple-A, posting a 5.32 ERA in 20 appearances.

In the Nashville dugout: Former Grassfield High and Tides pitcher Garrett Stallings, 26, is 1-0 with a 4.75 ERA, 15 walks and 26 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings for the Sounds (49-44, 11-7 in the second half) since Milwaukee acquired him in a May 25 trade with Baltimore.

Garrett Stallings, shown with the Norfolk Tides, now is pitching for their next opponents, the Nashville Sounds.

Schedule

Friday: 6:35 p.m. The Tides will give away 2023 Triple-A National Championship snow globes to the first 2,000 fans age 18 and over. It’s “Christmas in July,” including a pregame party with DJ CanRock.

Saturday: 6:35 p.m. The Tides will play as the Norfolk Squeezers, honoring the beverage Orange Crush. The Junior Tides Kids Club has a pregame event, DJ CanRock is part of another pregame party, and fireworks will follow the contest.

Sunday: 4:05 p.m. It will be Ladies Networking Day.

After a day off Monday, the Tides will start a six-game series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp at 6:35 p.m. next Tuesday.

Old Dominion Fan Fest set for Aug. 3 in Chesapeake https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/06/29/old-dominion-fan-fest-set-for-aug-3-in-chesapeake/ Sat, 29 Jun 2024 21:23:42 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7238521 If there’s one must-see event for Old Dominion fans in this summer’s offseason, it looks to be the Fan Fest on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Dick’s House of Sport in Chesapeake from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ODU’s flagship radio station, 94.1 FM, will be broadcasting from the site in Greenbrier Square. Ted Alexander will be on the air with football coach Ricky Rahne from 2-3 p.m. Many other ODU coaches and staff are expected to be on hand, including basketball’s Mike Jones and DeLisha Milton-Jones, and new Monarchs gear will be available.

The mascot “Big Blue” will host a scavenger hunt, and there will be interactive games for children.

Dedmon takes it all the way: It seems early for regular-season football, but there’s already a fun highlight from the Canadian Football League. Former Warhill High and William & Mary star DeVonte Dedmon of the Ottawa Redblacks (1-1) provided one of the CFL’s first electric moments of the season by returning a kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown, albeit in the fourth quarter of a 47-21 road loss June 20 to the Montreal Alouettes (4-0).

The 28-year-old caught the ball at the 9-yard line on the 110-yard field, eluded an arm tackle at the Ottawa 35 and was barely touched the rest of the way. If you were fortunate enough to see him with Warhill or the Tribe, you know how elusive he can be.

SEALs gain notable victories: The Chesapeake Post 280 SEALs posted an 8-3, 16-6 doubleheader victory last Sunday over the defending state champion Richmond-area West End team at Indian River High in a rematch of last year’s American Legion baseball state title game.

A six-run sixth inning, including home runs from Jake Chadwell and Andrew Vinerov, was critical in Game 1. In Game 2, the SEALs had 13 hits in five innings. Jonathan Ashe was 3 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs in the nightcap.

Local golfers earn match-play spots: Logan Reilly, 17, a Northern Virginian who has committed to play for Auburn, won the 111th Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship by winning 4 and 2 over former George Mason player Nikita Gubenko, 22, at Loudoun Golf & Country Club.

Several players with Hampton Roads ties qualified for the match-play bracket of 32 based on 36 holes of stroke play.

Former Christopher Newport star Robb Kinder, Churchland High alum Jonathan McEwen and Yorktown teen Brandon Sipe made the round of 32.

Former Catholic High star Xander Goboy, former Hickory High and Radford golfer Patrick Gareiss and Jamestown High graduates Ryan Leach and Bobby Dudeck III each won a match to advance to the round of 16. Leach will play for West Virginia, and Dudeck has competed for Radford.

Ex-CNU star signs with Ottawa: Former Christopher Newport star defender Coby Auslander recently signed with the National Lacrosse League’s Ottawa Black Bears, who will start their first season in December. He was chosen 73rd in the 2023 NLL entry draft.

Auslander, from Pennington, New Jersey, had 104 goals and 161 assists in 80 games over four years for the Captains. He was a second-team Division III All-American as a senior.

What’s coming up

Thursday: The playoff-bound Peninsula Pilots are home on Independence Day for a 7 p.m. game at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton against the Greenville Yard Gnomes.

Saturday: The US Road Running Club “Pirate” races, including a 5K, 10K and 15K, are set for Williamsburg’s Freedom Park at 8:30 a.m. Costumes are encouraged. … Langley Speedway’s 7 p.m. card includes twin Late Model and twin Virginia Racers events, plus Super Street, Grand Stock, Super Truck and Kart races.

Tides halt losing streak at five as Norby, Kjerstad, Stowers drive in four runs apiece https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/06/22/tides-halt-losing-streak-at-five-as-norby-kjerstad-stowers-drive-in-four-runs-apiece/ Sun, 23 Jun 2024 03:23:41 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7224804 The Norfolk Tides emphatically ended a five-game losing streak, zooming past Lehigh Valley 14-8 Saturday night before 10,100 at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Three Tides who have briefly appeared this year for the Baltimore Orioles drove in four runs apiece: Connor Norby, Heston Kjerstad and Kyle Stowers. Norby scored three runs and belted a three-run homer in the sixth. Kjerstad and Stowers each homered among two hits and scored twice.

Billy Cook and Maverick Handley added two hits each among Norfolk’s 12.

The night’s biggest drawback for Baltimore fans was the ineffectiveness of Dean Kremer, who was making a rehabilitation start. He gave up five earned runs, five hits and a walk and got just two outs with his 39 pitches.

Tucker Davidson pitched five innings for the win and struck out five, though he gave up three runs and three hits. Fellow Norfolk relievers Nolan Hoffman (2 1/3 innings) and Morgan McSweeney (one inning) gave up a hit each but no runs.

The IronPigs (33-39) still have a 4-1 lead in the six-game series, which concludes with a 1:35 p.m. Sunday contest.

The Tides’ bullpen had coughed up leads in the previous two games, but Norfolk (36-38) scored 12 consecutive runs to build a virtually insurmountable 14-5 edge before yielding three runs in the eighth inning.

Kody Clemens and Ruben Cardenas hit home runs for Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia’s top affiliate. Scott Kingery was ejected in the seventh inning.

Bruton’s Schweitzer, de Winter add doubles crown to team title https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/06/11/brutons-schweitzer-de-winter-add-doubles-crown-to-team-title/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 21:18:16 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7205480&preview=true&preview_id=7205480 Over a historic three days of high-stakes VHSL tennis, Bay Rivers and Peninsula District boys combined for five championships from Thursday through Saturday.

Freshman Christoph Schweitzer provided almost as much impact as any player could have. Thursday, he led Bruton to its first boys tennis team state crown with a 5-2 victory over Radford on Liberty University’s courts, winning at No. 1 singles and adding the clinching point at No. 1 doubles with Max de Winter. Schweitzer then started the event’s individual phase by joining de Winter to win a doubles semifinal.

Schweitzer began Friday with a 6-2, 7-5 singles semifinal victory over Grayson County’s Keyshawn Phipps, then joined de Winter for a 6-3, 6-4 triumph in the doubles final against Richlands’ Jack Clem and Cooper Hurst.

Schweitzer’s streak finally ended Saturday, when Clem repeated as the singles champion with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over him.

Grafton’s Christiansen takes two titles

Also at Liberty, Grafton’s Rainer Christiansen came through at the best time possible.

Thursday morning, his match at No. 1 singles went unfinished as powerful Western Albemarle ran its state championship streak to seven by shutting out the Clippers 5-0.

But Christiansen wouldn’t taste individual defeat as a Clipper. Thursday afternoon, he and John Lee halted Western Albemarle’s two-year streak of winning doubles crowns, edging Brader Eby and Wade Sturman 7-5, 7-5 in a semifinal.

Friday, Christiansen, authored a dramatic 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) singles semifinal victory over Eby. That preceded the doubles final, in which Christiansen and Lee defeated Maggie Walker’s Alex Percey and Ethan Choe 6-4, 6-4.

Saturday, before he and his family needed to get back east for graduation, Christiansen completed a storybook 12th-grade season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Christiansburg’s Lucas Beasley. Vastly improved this year as his school dropped from Class 4, Christiansen took his fourth consecutive region title and the Bay Rivers’ first state boys singles crown since Grafton’s Yakov Diskin won three in a row in Group AA from 2004-06.

Diskin often was coached by Christiansen’s father, Eric, who won AA doubles titles in 1997 and ’98 and soon will be Rainer’s coach with Christopher Newport.

Menchville’s Onoff rules in Class 5

Meanwhile, Menchville senior Matthew Onoff took a surprising Class 5 singles championship at Huntington Park, where his father, Thomas, is the recreation program coordinator for the city of Newport News.

Dylan Chou of Douglas Freeman, the Region C winner, was a huge favorite to repeat as the state champion, but an injury prevented him from playing his semifinal against Cox senior Neil Vanga, opening the door for an unexpected champ.

In a semifinal Friday, Onoff showed his newfound consistency by posting a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lightridge’s Thanush Buneti.

Saturday, Onoff romped 6-0, 6-0 over Vanga of Cox, who defeated him 6-2, 6-3 indoors during a Universal Tennis Rating event last fall. It won the first state tennis crown for a Peninsula District player since Menchville’s Kip Layman won back-to-back Group AAA championships in 1991 and ’92.

Also at Huntington Park, Jamestown star Keean Buirski’s first state singles appearance was a 6-2, 6-3 Class 4 semifinal loss to Broad Run’s Neel Pasunuri. Buirski won the Region A championship in singles and in doubles with Charles Aractingi for the region team champion Eagles.

Connor Hall drives to two more Langley Speedway Late Model feature victories https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/06/09/connor-hall-drives-to-two-more-langley-speedway-late-model-feature-victories/ Sun, 09 Jun 2024 05:17:31 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7201635 Hampton native Connor Hall added two more notches to his recent Langley Speedway domination, winning both 50-lap Late Model features Saturday night.

Hall, a Hampton native who was able to compete at Langley because it was an off weekend for the CARS Tour, took the No. 77 car to Victory Lane in the opener, 1.171 seconds ahead of Woody Howard and 1.662 better than third-place Mark Wertz. The trio finished in just less than 21 minutes, and 14 of the 21 competitors ended on the lead lap.

In the second 50-lap race, Cole Bruce took second, Danny Edwards third and Dean Shiflett — who wasn’t in the opener — fourth. It was Hall’s sixth triumph of the season; he won the CARS Tour feature at Langley the previous weekend.

Points leader Greg Edwards was sixth in the first race and ninth in the second.

Super Truck: Chris McEvoy rolled to a 25-lap victory in just more than 12 minutes, outpacing Tim Carter by 0.439 of a second. Louis Pasderetz Sr. was third, 644-thousandths behind the victor.

It was a rough night for points leader Chase McAdams, who finished last among the field of 10.

Enduro: Alex Floroff and Zachary Herdlein dueled to the checkered flag on the 30th lap, with Floroff prevailing by 26-thousandths of a second after just more than 10 1/2 minutes.

Wendell White was third among 23 drivers, 8.845 seconds behind Floroff, who gained his division-leading third victory of 2024. Ryan Vinson, by far his closest rival in points, was fourth.

Grand Stock: Tim Wilson posted his second victory of the year, beating runner-up Bill Eaker by 2.022 seconds and third-place Paul Lubno by 3.034 and not quite 13 minutes.

Eight drivers started the 40-lap race, and only those three finished on the lead lap.

Virginia Racers: Ayden Millette earned a 50-lap triumph in more than 15 minutes, overcoming Jacob Derrick by 1.626 seconds and third-place Ryley Music, the standings leader, by 2.474. Music was 11th and 18th in the Late Model features.

Ten of the 15 starters finished on the lead lap.

Champ Kart: Ryan Hudgins slipped past Jordan Valdes by 50-thousandths of a second after they pulled away from the other five competitors in the 20-lap race.

Their duel took less than 7 1/2 minutes, and Hudgins equaled Valdes with his second triumph of the season. They are in close competition for the points lead.

Jimmy Carr was third, 12.310 seconds off the lead.
