Williamsburg seeks citizen input on quality of life, services for planning purposes https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/23/williamsburg-seeks-citizen-input-for-planning-purposes/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 14:41:50 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7265881&preview=true&preview_id=7265881 Williamsburg has launched its biannual resident survey to gather input on government services and measure the quality of life in the community. The city uses data gleaned from the survey for strategic planning.

The city uses the National Community Survey, which was developed by National Research Center at Polco. The survey captures opinions on the economy, mobility, community design, utilities, safety, natural environment, inclusivity, engagement and other elements of Williamsburg’s overall livability, according to a news release.

The results are intended to show Williamsburg’s strengths, areas of improvement and what matters most to residents. The city will also be able to see how its performance compares to other communities across the country.

Randomly selected households recently started receiving postcards indicating they have been invited to participate in the survey. They can fill out the survey online or wait for a paper survey to arrive in the mail. On Aug. 7, the online survey opens to all residents and will be available until Aug. 28.

The NCS survey is the first of several public input opportunities as city leaders gather feedback and data in the process to develop the 2025/2026 Goals, Initiatives, and Outcomes, a plan that lays out city priorities for the next two years.

Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center members’ art show opens; artwork sought for juried show https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/22/wcac-members-art-show-opens-next-week-artwork-sought-for-juried-show/ Mon, 22 Jul 2024 12:00:04 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7264610&preview=true&preview_id=7264610 WILLIAMSBURG —The Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center’s summer Members’ Co-op Show opens on Wednesday and runs through Sept. 6.

The show — in the main and middle galleries — will feature the work of 13 artists and artisans showing off multiple painting mediums, photography, fiber art, mixed media, collage and more.

“Co-op shows offer our member artists the opportunity to exhibit multiple works in their own designated spaces,” Janis Wood, WCAC president, said in a news release. “This gives our visitors an opportunity to get a better feel for the style and capabilities of each participating artist. If an artist’s body of work evokes an emotional response in the viewer, it’s likely to be a good fit in the home.”

The artists also work at the center and hold demos during the run of the show, Wood said.

Running concurrently in the Fireside Gallery will be the annual “Camera to Brush and Beyond” exhibit, “where artists and artisans interpret in their own mediums and styles photographs submitted by member photographers,” the release said. Both the original photograph and its interpretation are hung side-by-side at the exhibit.

Next to the Fireside Gallery, the Artisan Corner features new works in fiber art, jewelry, ceramics and other unique 3D artwork. WCAC, located at 110 Westover Ave., is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WCAC is also accepting artwork for its regional juried show, which runs Sept. 18 through Nov. 1. WCAC members and artists in the Hampton Roads and Richmond areas are invited to submit up to three original works. Entries will be processed through EntryThingy.com, including applications, image files and payment, and are due by July 26.

Artworks completed on or after Jan. 1, 2021, that have not been previously shown at WCAC are eligible for entry. All media, styles, techniques and original family-friendly subject matter are eligible.

Full details are available at visitwcac.org/programs/exhibits/juried-regional-art-show or by calling WCAC at 757-229-4949.

The full text of President Biden’s letter to the nation:

Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

July 21, 2024

My Fellow Americans,

Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation.

Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our Nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. American has never been better positioned to lead than we are today.

I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once in a century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’ve protected and preserved our Democracy. And we’ve revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.

It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.

I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.

For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all who have worked so hard to see me reelected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me.

I believe today what I always have: that there is noting America can’t do — when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America.

Joe Biden

The York County Resolves was a resolution created by the Committee of Safety to protest English taxation in 1774.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, historian Jim Gallagher will portray Thomas Nelson Jr., at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Gallagher will reenact the speech Nelson gave 250 years ago, encouraging citizens to protest the British crown and its policies.

The evening will also include live music and discussion. The event is hosted by the Williamsburg-Yorktown American Revolution Round Table and the Yorktown Commemoration Committee in partnership with the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission.

Gallagher will repeat his performance on the steps of York Hall at 301 Main St. at 11 a.m. on Saturday. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., 18th-century interpreters, musicians and storytellers will entertain visitors to Historic Yorktown.

Both events are part of the Virginia 250 commemorations in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. For more on upcoming events, visit visityorktown.org/va250.

Curbside recycling rates to rise in James City County https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/09/curbside-recycling-rates-to-rise-in-james-city/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 15:59:23 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7249221&preview=true&preview_id=7249221 James City County curbside recycling customers will see an increase in the price of service from $7 per month to $10.50 per month beginning with the August bill.

The change is due to increased administrative and contract costs for curbside recycling. To make the service self-supporting, a fee increase is needed. This is the first time the fee has increased since the program began in 2019.

According to the county, the recycling industry has been affected by labor problems; fuel price increases; vehicle/equipment purchase and maintenance price increases; prolonged delays in receiving parts; contamination by non-recyclables; and a rise in the price of processing recyclables.

For more information, visit jamescitycountyva.gov/4088/recycling-rates-are-changing. Customers who wish to make changes to their recycling service can visit jamescitycountyva.gov/3677/curbside-recycling-start-discontinue-ser or call 757-253-6700.
