“Melania” is the “powerful and inspiring story of a woman who has defined personal excellence, overcome adversity, and carved her own path,” according to a description on her website.

Copies of the black-covered hardback book with “Melania” written in white sell for $40, while a signed copy goes for $75. Each of those versions include 48 pages of color photos. A collector’s edition, on which the color scheme is reversed, costs $150. That version is also signed and promises bonus photographs and a digital collectible. Both are published by Skyhorse.

Melania Trump’s life has long been shrouded in mystery. According to her White House biography page, she was born on April 26, 1970, in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.

As Melania Knauss, she worked as a model in Europe but became a household name after marrying real estate mogul Donald Trump in 2005 and taking his surname. She gave birth to her only child, Barron Trump, in 2006.

Melania Trump long claimed to have graduated from the University of Ljubljana with a degree in architecture, which has been proven false. She has also said she speaks five languages, which too has been called into question.

Rarely is the enigmatic 54-year-old fashionista seen alongside her husband on the campaign trail, where he’s making his third bid for the U.S. presidency.

Melania was also absent from her husband’s criminal trial in March, where a jury agreed he falsified New York business records to cover up a hush money payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels regarding an alleged affair he had while married to Melania Trump.

When he was found liable in January for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll after she accused him of rape, Melania kept a low profile as well. She rarely sits down for interviews, and when she does, they typically reveal very little.

One of her most talked about comments came in the form of a fashion statement. In 2018, she was photographed wearing a jacket with “I really don’t care, do you?” written across the back, while visiting a migrant children detention center in Texas. That outfit, she later said, was to tell “the left-wing media” she couldn’t be rattled.

It’s unclear to what degree Melania Trump’s memoir might address her husband’s trials and tribulations or how they’ve impacted her life. A spokesperson told The Associated Press no information was available other than the online press release from Skyhorse Publishing.

An exact release date for the book hasn’t been announced, though pre-order information on the website says to allow 12 to 16 weeks for delivery.

Former Fox News host Lou Dobbs dead at 78 https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/18/lou-dobbs-dead-fox-news-host/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 21:41:58 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7261627&preview=true&preview_id=7261627 Longtime conservative commentator Lou Dobbs has died at age 78, former President Donald Trump announced on social media Thursday.

“The Great Lou Dobbs has just passed away — A friend, and truly incredible journalist, reporter, and talent,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “He understood the world, and what was ‘happening,’ better than others.”

Trump praised Dobbs as “unique in so many ways” and sent his condolences to the TV personality’s wife, Debi, and the Dobbs family.

“He will be greatly missed!” Trump wrote.

A short time later, an Instagram page tied to Dobbs confirmed the broadcaster’s death.

“It’s with a heavy heart we announce the passing of ‘The Great Lou Dobbs,’” the message read, remembering him as a “patriot and a great American” and “a fighter till the very end.”

A cause of death was not reported.

The former president’s Truth Social post appeared to be the first announcement of the death of Dobbs, who spent more than 20 years at CNN and a decade at the Fox Business Network.

Dobbs was a loyal Trump supporter known to promote conspiracy theories. His tenure with the Fox family ended in 2021 when “Lou Dobbs Tonight” was canceled in the throes of two defamation lawsuits filed by voting technologies companies against Fox News, which also named Dobbs.

CNN sources indicated at the time the lawsuits from Smartmatic and Dominion Voting Systems, the latter of which settled with Fox for $787.5 million, weren’t solely to blame for Dobbs’ severance from the right-wing media operation.

Dobbs, a Texas native who attended Harvard University, was with CNN at the cable news channel’s inception in 1980.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 2005.

Pat Sajak leaves ‘Wheel of Fortune’ June 7 with ‘Thanks for the Memories’ retrospective https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/05/20/pat-sajak-leaves-wheel-of-fortune-june-7-with-thanks-for-the-memories-retrospective/ Mon, 20 May 2024 18:05:33 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7137296 Pat Sajak’s nearly 43-year run as the host of “Wheel of Fortune” will reportedly end June 7 following a week of looking back at his time on the popular TV game show.

Sajak’s last episode, which was taped more than a month ago, caps off a weeklong series of shows called “Thanks for the Memories,” according to NewsNation.

The 77-year-old host said in June 2023 “the time has come” for him to announce his retirement from the nationally televised program, which he joined in 1981 when it was on during the daytime. In 1982, he teamed-up with letter-turning model Vanna White. A year later, “Wheel of Fortune” became the popular prime time lead-in its been for more than four decades.

White will stay with the show after television personality Ryan Seacrest, 49, takes over for Sajak, whose 28-year-old daughter, Maggie Sajak, will reportedly fill in for White on occasion.

White told People she thought about leaving “Wheel of Fortune” with Sajak, but decided to stick around for a few more turns of the wheel.

“I know everything about him,” she claimed. “He knows everything about me.”

It’s unclear if Sajak’s final appearances will intersperse “Wheel of Fortune” highlights with recently taped competitions or focus solely on memorable moments from the game show’s past. A “Wheel of Fortune” representative hasn’t responded to a Daily News request for clarification.

Amelia Earhart plane wreckage may have been found in Pacific https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/01/30/amelia-earhart-plane-found-deep-sea-vision/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 17:03:01 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=6428733&preview=true&preview_id=6428733 A South Carolina exploratory team claims it may have found the plane Amelia Earhart was flying when she disappeared in July 1937.

Robotic company Deep Sea Vision (DSV) said in a press release that a sonar image it recorded “in a swath of the Pacific untouched by known wrecks” could finally put to rest one of the nation’s most enduring mysteries.

That ocean floor image from west of the trailblazing aviator’s intended landing point reportedly mirrors “the unique dual tails and scale” of Earhart’s Lockheed 10-E Electra aircraft.

DSV said it came upon the image’s location based on the 2010 “Date Line Theory,” which suggests Earhart’s exhausted navigator forgot to turn his calendar back a day after crossing the International Date Line. That could have caused a celestial star navigation miscalculation, landing the plane 60 miles west of its intended destination.

No one had explored that area until now, DSV said. Company CEO Tony Romeo said the wreck they spotted appears to be intact.

“We always felt that she [Earhart] would have made every attempt to land the aircraft gently on the water, and the aircraft signature that we see in the sonar image suggests that may be the case,” he said.

Assisted by underwater archaeologists, DSV’s marine robotic experts spent 90 days searching a 5,200-square-mile area of the Pacific Ocean floor using a submersible called the HUGIN 6000. The vehicle’s side scan sonar is said to have nearly four times the reach of previously used equipment of its kind. The company is keeping the exact coordinates of its find private pending further examination.

DSV hasn’t responded to a request for further information.

Earhart, along with navigator Fred Noonan, disappeared during a 2,500-mile flight from New Guinea to Howland Island as they attempted to circle the globe. Speculation about their final flight has held the nation’s attention ever since.

Researchers at the Pennsylvania-based International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery said in 2014 they believed a piece of debris discovered on a remote Pacific atoll in 1991 came from Earhart’s aircraft.  An anthropology professor at the University of Tennessee said in 2018 he believed skeletal pieces found on the west Pacific’s Nikumaroro Island in 1940 belonged to The 37-year-old pilot. Dozens of alleged witnesses claimed they heard Earhart calling for help via radio as her situation worsened.

Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum aeronautics curator Dorothy Cochrane told Smithsonian the image captured by DSV is “intriguing” and merits further examination.

Florida 15-year-old shoots younger brother who killed their sister after fight over Christmas gifts https://www.pilotonline.com/2023/12/27/florida-15-year-old-shoots-younger-brother-who-killed-their-sister-after-fight-over-christmas-gifts/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 14:06:33 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=6141971 A 15-year-old Florida boy is accused of shooting his 14-year-old brother after that teenager fatally shot their 23-year-old sister as she sat outside with her baby on Christmas Eve, authorities said Tuesday.

Police said the brothers had earlier gotten into a fight during a family shopping trip over who was getting what for Christmas, according to CBS News. When the siblings’ mother took them all to their grandmother’s house in Largo afterwards, the fighting continued. The 14-year-old reportedly pointed a semiautomatic handgun at his older brother’s head and threatened to kill him.

The boys were separated by an uncle who managed to get the younger sibling out of the home where his sister, Abrielle Baldwin, was sitting outside with her child. Baldwin is said to have asked her brother to end the dispute.

The 14-year-old, apparently angered by his sister’s request, berated her with pejoratives, then threatened to shoot Baldwin and her baby before firing a bullet into the woman’s arm and chest. Her baby was uninjured.

The 15-year-old reportedly then emerged from the grandmother’s house with a semiautomatic handgun and shot his younger brother in the stomach. He then fled the home, throwing the gun into a nearby yard, and was later taken into custody at a family member’s house.

The younger brother, who might be charged as an adult for first-degree murder, is in stable condition in a Tampa-area hospital after undergoing surgery. The 15-year-old has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence.

CBS News reports both teens have prior arrests for vehicular burglaries.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department told the Daily News that “the investigation is still open and active, therefore the report is unable to be released at this time.”

Baldwin also had a 6-year-old child.

Law firm rescinds job offer to NYU Law School Bar Association president over Israel-Hamas comments https://www.pilotonline.com/2023/10/11/law-firm-rescinds-job-offer-to-nyu-law-school-bar-association-president-over-israel-hamas-comments/ Wed, 11 Oct 2023 15:09:07 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=5397662&preview=true&preview_id=5397662 A prominent international law firm has rescinded its job offer to NYU Law School Bar Association student president Ryna Workman over “inflammatory” comments regarding the deadly weekend attacks on Israel by Palestinian militant group Hamas.

“I want to express, first and foremost, my unwavering and absolute solidarity with Palestinians in their resistance against oppression toward liberation and self-determination,” the nonbinary student wrote in a school-wide newsletter posted to social media. “Israel bears full responsibility for this tremendous loss of life. This regime of state-sanctioned violence created the conditions that made resistance necessary. I will not condemn Palestinian resistance.”

Workman’s missive instead condemned several ideas and institutions — including the “United States military-industrial complex” and “the violence of trapping thousands in an open air-prison” — but not Hamas.

The Gaza Strip houses more than 2 million Palestinians in a 25-mile stretch of land with borders that are largely controlled by Israel. It’s sometimes described as an outdoor detention center. The Palestinian group Hamas polices the Strip itself.

Winston & Strawn LLP, which has offices in the Midtown’s Metlife building, as well as Chicago, Washington D.C., London, Hong Kong, Paris and Shanghai, decried Workman’s position on social media.

“These comments are profoundly in conflict with Winston & Strawn’s values as a firm,” the company posted on X. “Accordingly, the law firm has rescinded the law student’s offer of employment.

The law group referred to Workman as a “former summer associate.”

NYU also distanced itself from the student’s comments.

“The statement issued by the Student Bar Association does not in any way reflect the point of view of NYU,” the school said. “Acts of terrorism are immoral. The indiscriminate killing of civilians and hostage-taking, including children and the elderly, is reprehensible. Blaming victims of terrorism for their own deaths is wrong.”

‘Joe the Plumber,’ who famously confronted Obama on the campaign trail, dead at 49 https://www.pilotonline.com/2023/08/28/joe-the-plumber-who-famously-confronted-obama-on-the-campaign-trail-dead-at-49/ Mon, 28 Aug 2023 17:27:21 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=5165834&preview=true&preview_id=5165834 Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, better known as political activist “Joe the Plumber,” is dead at 49.

Wurzelbacher gained prominence in 2008 when he met then-candidate Barack Obama in Ohio during the future president’s 2008 presidential campaign. The Republican activist told Obama he was interested in opening a plumbing business and asked how the Democratic candidate’s tax plan would impact that venture. Wurzelbacher’s on-camera questions, along with his everyman demeanor, earned him the Joe the Plumber moniker.

He built that persona into a brand that netted a book deal and led to a flirtation with the country music business, according to Politico. Wurzelbacher ran for office in 2012 but was soundly defeated by Democrat Marcy Kaptur in the race to represent Ohio’s ninth congressional district.

One thing he wasn’t was a licensed plumber, according to the Columbia Dispatch, which reported “Joe the Plumber” never completed an apprenticeship, nor was he a member of Local 50 of the United Association of Plumbers. That union backed Obama in 2008.

In 2016, Wurzelbacher expressed enthusiasm over Donald Trump’s White House candidacy.

“He’s a winner. He’s made billions,” he told Reuters “He’s dated beautiful women. His wife is a model. That’s not to sniff at.”

Wurzelbacher said Trump was running in an era of when many people are afraid to speak their minds.

“They are afraid of being labeled a racist or a homophobe,” he lamented.

Wurzelbacher married in 2011 and had three children with his wife Katie, according to a fundraising page set up in 2022 after his family said he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. His death was confirmed on that page Sunday.

“Joe passed away earlier this morning and entered our Lord’s heavenly home,” that message said. “Joe had been too sick/in too much pain to get out of bed lately and his goal was to get Katie and their kids moved to her hometown surrounded by family.”

Wurzelbacher also had an adult son from a previous relationship, according to Reuters.

Bob Barker, ‘The Price Is Right’ host for 35 years, dies at 99 https://www.pilotonline.com/2023/08/26/bob-barker-the-price-is-right-host-for-35-years-dies-at-99/ Sat, 26 Aug 2023 17:19:48 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=5164066 Longtime game show host and animal rights activist Bob Barker has died. He was 99.

The former “The Price is Right” host Barker died peacefully at home of natural causes on Saturday morning in L.A. his rep Roger Neal confirmed to The Daily News. “It is with profound sadness that we announce that the World’s Greatest MC who ever lived, Bob Barker, has left us,” Neal said.

Barker’s longtime friend Nancy Burnet, who has overseen his care for the past several years, is co-executor of the daytime TV icon’s estate.

“I am so proud of the trailblazing work Barker and I did together to expose the cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry and including working to improve the plight of abused and exploited animals in the United States and internationally,” Burnet said in a statement. ” We were great friends over these 40 years. He will be missed.”

For 35 years, Barker invited studio audience guests to “Come on down!” for a chance to win items ranging from automobiles to vacation packages. In 182 — a decade after taking over the program — he began closing each show by reminding viewers to help control the pet population by having their dogs and cats spayed and neutered.

Prior to moving to CBS’s “The Price is Right,” Barker spent nearly 20 years hosting the game show “Truth or Consequences.”

He wrote of both experiences in his 2009 memoir “Priceless Memories.”

Barker returned three times to host “The Price is Right” after his June 2007 retirement. His final appearance was for an April Fool’s Day segment in 2015, after which he passed the reins back to comedian Drew Carey, who preceded Barker.

Barker was born in Washington state and raised on a South Dakota reservation. He married Dorothy Jo Gideon in 1945. They stayed together until her death in 1981. They married while Barker was on leave from the U.S. Navy in 1945.

December 12 would have marked a century of life for Barker, who made his film debut punching Adam Sandler’s character in the 1996 golf film “Happy Gilmore,” which earned him an MTV Movie Award.

“I’m old, but I’m tough,” he told Entertainment Tonight while talking about that scene.

He said he studied martial arts with film star Chuck Norris for eight years, who always outfought him.

“But I got Adam!” he joked.

He also made cameos as himself on several TV shows including “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Nanny.”

A former “Price is Right” model sued the show’s star in 1994, accusing him of sexual misconduct while they were colleagues. Barker claimed he was in a consensual relationship with Playboy model turned “Barker’s Beauty” Dian Parkinson from 1989 to 1991, but denied wrongdoing. The pair worked together for 18 years.

Barker, a vegetarian, will be remembered for his animal activism, which PETA thanked him for in 2018 by naming a rescued horse in his honor.

“We love this man, but what do you give someone who has everything and gives his all to animals? The answer is a rescued horse named in his honor,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement on Barker’s 10 year anniversary of his involvement with the animal rights group.

He’s donated money and recorded an ad supporting PETA’s efforts.

In 1988, he announced his withdrawal from the Miss Universe beauty pageant he’d hosted for more than 20 years because officials insisted on rewarding fur coats to participants.

“I cannot do them (the pageants) as long as they give away fur coats,” he protested. “This involves morality.″

The pageant tweeted him a happy birthday wish in 2021. He started working with the pageant in 1967.

Barker had several health scares throughout his long life. They included a partially blocked left carotid artery, a stroke, prostate surgery and skin cancer, according to Distractify. He also required stitches after a 2015 fall outside his Los Angeles home.

Readers rated Barker TV’s second-greatest game show host in a 2023 poll, where he trailed only former “Jeopardy” host Alex Trebek. Other polls reversed the order. Trebek lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2020 at 80 years old.

Barker announced his impending exit from “The Price is Right” in good humor in 2006, while correctly predicting he still had several good years in him.

“I will be 83 years old on December 12,” he told viewers, “And I’ve decided to retire while I’m still young.”

Clarence Avant, ‘Black Godfather,’ dead at 92 https://www.pilotonline.com/2023/08/14/clarence-avant-black-godfather-dead-at-92/ Mon, 14 Aug 2023 19:05:43 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=5140316&preview=true&preview_id=5140316 Wheeling, dealing and innovating entertainment executive Clarence Avant is dead at 92.

Dubbed “The Black Godfather” in a 2019 documentary detailing his work with stars including Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, Michael Jackson, Bill Withers and five U.S. presidents, Avant died “gently” in his Los Angeles home on Sunday, according to a statement from his family published by Variety.

“The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss,” his loved ones wrote.

The Climax, N.C. native moved to Newark, N.J. as a teenager and got involved in the music business as a nightclub manager. He soon came under the mentorship of Joe Glaser, who helped launch artists including Louis Armstrong and Barbra Streisand.

Avant developed a knack for developing talent and recognizing potential. He takes credit for introducing former NFL star Jim Brown to acting, which launched a hugely successful second act for the “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka” star.

Avant started a pair of record labels and helped negotiate the sale of Stax Records before becoming chairman of Motown Records and a board member at PolyGram. He produced Michael Jackson’s “Bad” tour in 1988 after allegedly turning down the gig three times.

I just do things,” Avant told Variety in 2016. “I just like to take shots.”

Avant’s ability to cut a deal wasn’t limited to music. He helped Muhammad Ali score a TV special on ABC News and negotiated an unprecedented endorsement package for Hank Aaron that paid the MLB great more than he made playing baseball. That deal came when Aaron, dogged by bigoted critics, was closing in on Babe Ruth’s longstanding home run record.

“Without Clarence Avant, there is no Hank Aaron,” Aaron said in “The Black Godfather.”

Bill Clinton, one of the five presidents he advised, said in “Black Godfather” that Avant’s “advice per word is worth more than anyone I ever dealt with.” In the same doc, Barack Obama praised Avant for understanding “the power that comes from being behind the scenes.”

Music producer Quincy Jones also praised his friend and colleague’s talent as a strategist.

“Everyone in this business has been by Clarence’s desk, if they’re smart,” Jones said.

Avant was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2016. It rests next to the stars of music producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, whose work with Avant led to the success of acts including the S.O.S. Band.

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 following an introduction from Lionel Richie that came with a time restriction.

“There’s no way possible you can talk about Clarence Avant in four minutes,” the singer told a live audience. “He’s the perfect marriage between street sense and common sense.”

Cop aims at charging Pomeranian, shoots woman on porch instead, bodycam video shows https://www.pilotonline.com/2023/08/06/cop-aims-at-charging-pomeranian-shoots-woman-on-porch-instead-bodycam-video-shows/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 14:49:12 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=5126724

An Arkansas woman standing on a porch was shot by a deputy attempting to shoot a Pomeranian coming his way, according to bodycam footage and a lawsuit obtained by Little Rock station KATV.

Tina Hight filed a lawsuit in June against a Columbia County deputy, a sheriff, and the sheriff’s office following a 2022 incident she says left a bullet in her shin and continues causing anxiety. Video appears to show Columbia County Deputy Brian Williams frantically warning he’ll open fire on the dog that’s running his way as Hight, at least one family member and another law enforcement officer are standing in a doorway several yards away.

“I’ll kill this motherf—er,” the deputy yells. “Get your goddamn dog.”

A full-grown Pomeranian can stand 11-inches tall and weigh up to seven pounds. The American Kennel Club calls the breed inquisitive and bold.

Mere seconds later, Williams opens fire as the dog closes in, causing a commotion on the porch as Hight goes down.

“You shot my aunt!” one woman shouts.

“I shot who?” the deputy asks. “I didn’t shoot her.”

Williams then claims Hight’s injury was caused by the Pomeranian or perhaps the other dog that was standing on the porch. According to Hight’s lawsuit — and video of her telling the alleged shooter “You shot me!” — that wasn’t the case.

“I have never been shot before,” Hight told KATV is an interview aired Thursday. “I didn’t understand.”

Hight said being shot by a cop will make her think twice the next time she’s in need of help. The nature of the police officers’ visit isn’t clear, but KATV reports that Hight initially called 911.

The station says the deputy’s personnel file shows no record of any reprimand following the incident. An attorney representing the officers being sued didn’t respond to KATV’s request for comment.
