Letters for July 14: Chesapeake needs to finish the job at Backwoods Road

Letter writers urge Chesapeake to improve Backwoods Road near the North Carolina line, argue former President Donald Trump is the better candidate, and urge the public to vote for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Dangerous

The condition of Backwoods Road in Chesapeake is horrible. Most of the road was repaved a few years ago except for the last 0.03 of a mile to the Currituck County line. (Perhaps they ran out of tar.) I have called a few times about this, and the city comes out and fix a few holes. But the main problem of this very curvy section of a two-lane road is the huge bumps on the side caused by tree roots. They do not fix this problem properly, but just tar over the top of the bumps.

A young man was killed in or near this area a few months ago. And while I do not know the circumstance of that accident, it could happen to anybody. There is no easement, and if meeting someone coming from the other direction who may be crossing the yellow line just a little as happens all the time on curves, it is another accident waiting to happen.

Another bad road is South Battlefield Boulevard. It’s a heavily traveled road that needs repaving, widening and remarking. I cannot imagine that Chesapeake with its heavily taxed residents does not have enough money to fix things properly.

A mess

The mainstream media and the White House appear to have been covering up the true physical and mental health of the president. This is a betrayal and disservice to the American people who are trying to decide who to vote for as their next president. Now the truth is evident to all with eyesight. The gaslighting of the public has shown the true motives of power retention of the blue team; but in doing so, the team has boxed itself into probably no-win alternatives. The Democrats must ride the coattails of an incompetent, incapable incumbent or put forth relatively unknown candidates. The desperate prayers of the blue team for Michelle Obama to step forward will go unanswered.

All politicians lie, exaggerate and use hyperbole. This election is no different. These accusations and counter accusations should not significantly influence our decision. Your vote should be tied to who gives us for the best chance for a brighter future for all Americans. Who can best correct the major issues of immigration, crime and inflation or cost of living that all Americans are facing? It is former President Donald Trump? He is an egotist, narcissist, bully, philanderer, convicted felon (at least temporarily) and autocratic leader wannabe.

Those qualities, however, don’t disqualify him from being president. He cares about the major issues facing most Americans and is dedicated to fixing them. Trump demands respect and fear from the rest of our world’s adversarial leaders. The USA needs to regain the respect and admiration we have lost under the Biden administration. It is time for a change.

Immunity ruling

The president and every member of the U.S. Armed Forces take the following oath, “I, (state your full name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic … .”

So does the Supreme Court’s limited immunity ruling mean that as an official act, the president can declare any American citizen a threat and instruct the Justice Department to charge and prosecute him or her for treasonous or terrorist acts? Does it mean that the president can declare that any member of or the entire Supreme Court is a threat to democracy if they don’t heed the president’s wishes for a particular decision and have the Justice Department prosecute?

As commander in chief, does it mean that the president can use this newly granted power to use the military to round up any and all persons who are not U.S. citizens and place them in determent camps until deported? The Supreme Court has declared that a common man is above the law. Worse, the court declared that a man, not worthy of, nor qualified for, the presidency, is above the law. He’s a dangerous, narcissistic, habitual liar and a criminal, who has also been found liable for sexual abuse. He also favors oligarchs and dictators above the U.S.

Wake up America. We must vote Democratic. We must save our democracy. We must reelect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. We must also vote down ticket and take control of the House and keep control of the Senate. Then we might be able to correct the damages done by the likes of Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and John Roberts.

The patriot

The only priority in November is to protect our Constitution from the dire threat it faces were former President Donald Trump to be reelected. Is President Joe Biden in his prime? Certainly not. That is indisputable. But if forced to choose between an aging patriot and an aging traitor, I will always pick the patriot.

Biden?

Why President Joe Biden? Why not Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg? He’s a Democrat with military service.
