The most recent figure is 185. It incorrectly stated the number of commercial ships produced annually by the United States in 1975; shipyards produced about 20 ships per year. And the federal government subsidizes the operation of Chinese-made oil tankers supplying U.S. Navy vessels, but does not directly purchase them.

Two charged in shootout that left man, Norfolk officer injured https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/07/two-charged-in-shootout-that-left-man-norfolk-officer-injured/ Sun, 07 Jul 2024 20:23:57 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7247372 Two people have been charged in connection with a shootout Saturday that left a man and a Norfolk police officer injured.

Officers were dispatched around 3:20 p.m. to a home in the 3800 block of Arcadia Street to help Child Protective Services with an investigation, according to a news release from police. When they arrived, Cassandra J. Smith, 23, of Norfolk, became combative and Samuel M. Burton, 29, of Norfolk, began firing at them, the release said.

Police returned fire and Burton was critically injured. He remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon, the release said. One officer was shot multiple times and is expected to recover. The child who was the subject of the call was safe, according to a Norfolk police spokesperson Saturday.

Smith has been charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, and obstruction of justice. She was taken into custody Saturday and is being held in Norfolk City Jail without bond.

Burton has been charged with attempted aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, and use of a firearm. He will be taken to Norfolk City Jail and held without bond once he’s released from the hospital, the release said.

State Police are investigating the officer’s actions. Anyone who was in the 3800 block of Arcadia Street at the time and may have information that would assist investigators is asked to contact the Norfolk Crime Line or State Police. All involved officers will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
