On Wednesday, July 31, customers can get as many doughnuts as they like for $1 each, while supplies last, the North Carolina-based chain said in a news release.

The offer is only available in-store and no additional purchase is necessary.

Rewards members can get $1 original glazed doughnuts starting Thursday, Aug. 1, for a limited time, according to Krispy Kreme.

The doughnut and coffee chain is also rolling out a few limited-time treats to celebrate the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The new “Go USA” dozen features three fan-favorite doughnuts:

• Go USA doughnut
• Chocolate iced glazed with sprinkles doughnut
• Original glazed doughnut

The first-class mail Forever stamp will see a 5-cent increase, jumping from 68 cents to 73 cents starting July 14, according to USPS.

It matches the largest increase in the Postal Service’s history and follows steady price hikes in recent years, data show. Rates first went up a nickel in 2019, when the cost to send a domestic letter went from 50 cents to 55 cents.

More recently, the USPS has raised the price on stamps to bring in “much needed revenue” amid rising costs fueled by inflation.

“As changes in the mailing and shipping marketplace continue, these price adjustments are needed to achieve the financial stability sought by the organization’s Delivering for America 10-year plan,” according to USPS.

Customers can expect other services to get more expensive, too, the Postal Service said. Metered letters will soon cost 69 cents to send, according to officials, and domestic postcards will cost 56 cents.

As of now, there aren’t plans to adjust Post Office Box rental fees, USPS said.

On Thursday, June 20, North Carolina customers can score a free pint of their favorite Kroger brand ice cream at participating stores, the company said in a news release. No purchase is necessary. Kroger stores in Virginia are not participating in this promotion.

The grocery store giant said it plans to give away 45,000 free pints — or 50 pints per minute of daylight. Customers can visit FreeKrogerIceCream.com on Thursday and download a single-use digital coupon for a free pint, while supplies last.

“With more sunshine to enjoy a sweet treat, we are giving away ice cream for 15 hours straight; that is a whole lot of free ice cream,” Juan De Paoli, vice president of Our Brands for Kroger, said in the release.

Fans can pick from a variety of flavors, including vivid vanilla, mint chocolate chip and tie dye burst, according to the grocer.

There are exceptions, however.

The coupon can be redeemed at Kroger family of stores in most states except: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming, the grocery chain said.

Starting Aug. 28, customers can order the new Honey Pepper Pimento Chicken Sandwich at participating restaurants nationwide, excluding Hawaii, the Atlanta-based chicken chain announced in a news release.

The Caramel Crumble Milkshake will also join Chick-fil-A’s fall lineup, the release said.

The seasonal offerings will be available for a limited time, while supplies last.

A spin on its original chicken sandwich, the new Honey Pepper Pimento version features an “original Chick-fil-A filet, topped with custom-made creamy pimento cheese, mild pickled jalapeños and served on a warm, toasted bun” that’s drizzled with honey, according to a product description.

It’s the first time Chick-fil-A has tinkered with the classic sandwich, giving customers in Asheville, North Carolina, and upstate South Carolina a first taste back in 2020, the release said.

Now chicken lovers nationwide will have a chance to try it for themselves.

“We wanted to create a standout sandwich that would deliver a unique spin for our guests, without losing the classic taste of the Original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich,” Stuart Tracy, Chick-fil-A Chef and creator of the new sandwich said in a statement.

Those in search of something sweet can try the Caramel Crumble shake. It’s the restaurant’s seventh seasonal milkshake, this one reminiscent of “the flavors that caramelize at the bottom of a blondie pan,” according to Chick-fil-A’s website.

The hand-spun treat is made with vanilla soft serve blended with butterscotch caramel flavor, blondie crumbles and topped with a cherry and whipped cream.

Pricing information for the new offerings wasn’t immediately available.

“It was surreal!” Byron Bundoc told officials. “I called my brother and said, ‘You’re not going to believe this!’”

The Virginia Beach man said he just returned from volunteering and was playing the Jackpot Spectacular game in his driveway when he realized he’d won the $1,817,588 prize, according to a news release.

The instant win game features “a progressive, growing jackpot” and requires players to uncover at least three matching symbols to win, the Virginia Lottery website says.

Bundoc, who’s serving in the U.S. Navy, had been keeping an eye on the growing jackpot as it swelled to a historic high.

The odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.99, according to officials. Odds of winning the jackpot “vary by price point.”

The sailor didn’t say how he plans to spend his newfound wealth.

Duct work fell from the ceiling Monday, June 13, at the Mystic Grill in Covington, leaving one person seriously injured, Fire Chief Jeremy Holmes told McClatchy News.

At least three others were treated for minor injuries.

Crews were called to the restaurant about a possible roof collapse “with multiple people trapped,” Holmes said.

Further inspection showed the roof had not caved in, but that part of a duct fell through the ceiling onto the patrons below.

“Covington Fire personnel began triaging the patients and crews began treatment and stabilization of the ductwork,” Holmes said in a statement. “National EMS arrived on scene and continued with CFD the process of stabilizing and removing the serious patient.”

Mystic Grill has gained popularity among fans of supernatural teen drama “The Vampire Diaries,” on which it’s based.

The show is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, but Covington was its main filming location during the show’s eight-season run, according to ExploreGeorgia.org.

“Inspired by two communities: the family and fans of The Vampire Diaries and the small town community we call home,” according to the restaurant’s website. “The television series, filmed here in Covington, inspired the owners to bring the on screen restaurant to life.”

The eatery was temporarily closed pending further inspection and welcomed back guests for lunch and dinner as of Tuesday, June 14, according to a statement posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page. Covington is about 30 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

Officials received a call Sunday, May 22, about a disabled boat that had run out of gas about 5 miles off Bald Head Island, Lt. Andrew Jacot told McClatchy News. The Coast Guard responded around 5 p.m. and began towing the boat from offshore into the Cape Fear River.

With five passengers on board, the boat was being pulled to safety when it was hit by “approximately 10-foot waves,” Jacot said. The boat then capsized, sending all five people into the water.

The Coast Guard’s “47-foot motor life boat broke the tow (with the disabled boat) and rescued all five individuals,” according to Jacot.

The passengers were evaluated by EMS and no injuries were reported, he said. Officials also recovered the capsized boat.

Bald Head Island is about 170 miles south of Raleigh.

The limited-edition Wagyu Steakhouse Burger is a first for the Atlanta-based sandwich chain and will be available at participating restaurants nationwide starting May 23, the company announced.

The new menu offering features a blend of American Wagyu and ground beef cooked sous vide style to give the burger “a crispy outer edge and slightly pink center,” according to a product description. The sandwich boasts the “largest single patty” compared to other quick-serve restaurants, according to Arby’s, weighing 6.4 ounces before it hits the grill.

“Boring Burgers are a fast-food staple, so Arby’s felt compelled to raise the bar with a Wagyu Steakhouse Burger,” Patrick Schwing, Chief Marketing Officer of Arby’s, said in a statement. “As the meat experts, we’ve spent over two years of dedicated research and development to deliver a premium burger that redefines what’s possible from a drive thru.”

The beef patty is topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion and a special sauce on a toasted brioche bun, according to a news release. Fans in search of even more flavor can add their choice of bacon or ranch.

The Wagyu Steakhouse Burger is available through July 31 starting at $5.99.

The woman is accused of badgering 911 with multiple calls after her son brought his girlfriend to their Inman home, Spartanburg County sheriff’s deputies wrote in a report. The first call came in just before midnight on Tuesday, April 26.

Deputies arrived to find a woman “visibly and emotionally upset, as well as heavily intoxicated” in an argument with her adult son, the report reads. She told deputies she was upset because he brought his girlfriend home after she told him not to.

Deputies advised the woman that her son, who said he planned to stay the night before he and his girlfriend headed to New York the next day, had the right to have guests because he lived there. To avoid any more issues, the son and his girlfriend were told to stay in his room for the rest of the night before deputies left.

But that didn’t work.

Deputies were called back to the home just forty minutes later around 12:20 a.m., and then a third time at 4:12 a.m. after the son refused to make his girlfriend leave, according to the report.

“The call was in reference to a disturbance between caller and her adult son,” deputies said. The woman “was then informed that if he [sic] continues to call, then enforcement action will be taken.”

The woman called 911 a fourth and final time at 4:49 a.m., but she left before deputies arrived, her son said. She was arrested a short time later after returning home.

The woman was charged with misuse of 911 and booked into the Spartanburg County Jail, where she remains held as of Wednesday, April 27, according to online records.

Spartanburg is about 90 miles northwest of Columbia.

The incident occurred Saturday, March 12, at a Citgo station in Kennesaw, according to a police report obtained by McClatchy News.

Customers inside the convenience store said they noticed a man, dressed in a work jumpsuit with “a prominent bulge coming from his waistband,” as he sat down at one of the slot machines. Minutes later, he pulled out a sledgehammer, raised it over his head and whacked the machine three times, breaking it open.

“My customers were shocked, we were all shocked,” the owner of the store told WAGA.

The owner told police that the man briefly played the machine when he first came in before getting up and wedging a floor mat under the front door, propping it open. He then returned to the game, the owner said, and began hammering away at the machine.

Witnesses said the man reached in and grabbed “a large wad of cash” before running outside to a car waiting at the McDonald’s next door, according to the report. The store owner estimates the thief got away with about $7,000.

No injuries were reported, police said.

The gaming machine was registered to the Georgia Lottery Corporation, a Kennesaw police spokesman told McClatchy News.

The unknown man is wanted on charges of vandalism and theft from a coin-operated machine, authorities said.

Kennesaw is about 30 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
