HIGH SCHOOLS
Poquoson High captured the 2023-24 National Guard Cup in VHSL Class 2 for year-long athletic success.
The Islanders collected 522.5 points for their second Cup in four years. Bruton finished second in Class 2 with 487.5 points.
A points system determines the winners based on performance in VHSL state championships.
Other winners included Auburn (Class 1), Western Albemarle (Class 3), Atlee (Class 4), Independence (Class 5) and Battlefield (Class 6).
Lafayette finished second in Class 3, Jamestown was fourth in Class 4 and First Colonial and Ocean Lakes were fifth and sixth, respectively, in Class 5.
COLLEGES
CNU claims all-sports survey title
Christopher Newport has captured the College Division All-Sports Survey title distributed by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
The Captains posted a 247-78-5 overall record to lead all non-NCAA Division I programs in the state. Their 75.6 winning percentage was the fourth-highest in school history and they qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all 13 sports that feature a bracketed postseason event for the first time.
CNU finished 14th in the Learfield Directors Cup.
Eight CNU players make all-state
Eight Christopher Newport football players earned honors on the Virginia Sports Information Directors’ All-State team.
Offensive lineman Josh Hartley and return specialist Trey Hayes each made the first team.
Six Captains players are on the second team: quarterback Matt Dzierski, running back Gunner White, wide receiver Colin Hart, offensive lineman Amaan Miller, linebacker Kindrick Braxton and punter Baylor Gallagher.
The Captains went 7-4 last season and captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference title for the first time.
Two state teams in Paradise Jam field
Liberty and Longwood have been invited to play in the 2024 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam men’s basketball tournament on Nov. 22-25.
The other teams in the field include Kansas State, McNeese, UAB, Louisiana, George Washington and Illinois State.
Liberty’s first game will be against Louisiana at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 22. Longwood’s opening contest will be against UAB at 1:30 p.m. the same day.
- The William & Mary men’s golf team will play in five events this fall, starting with the Bryan National Collegiate on Sept. 8-10 at the Champions Course at Bryan Park in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Tribe will also play in two events in Pennsylvania and one each in Maryland and New Jersey.
PRO BASKETBALL
Ex-W&M player to coach in NBA Summer League
Former William & Mary basketball player Sean Sheldon will serve as the Utah Jazz’s head coach during the NBA Summer League.
Sheldon, who finished his second season with the Jazz, recently earned a promotion to assistant coach.
The Jazz opened the Salt Lake City Summer League with a 97-95 overtime win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. Utah will play in the NBA 2K25 Summer League in Las Vegas starting Saturday.
HOCKEY
Former Admiral signs with Moose
Former Norfolk Admirals forward Mark Liwiski has signed a one-year contract with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, who like the Admirals are affiliated with the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets.
Liwiski tallied 25 points (11 goals and 14 assists) in 54 games with the Admirals last season and led the ECHL with 310 penalty minutes. He played seven games with the Moose last season and had a goal and an assist.
