Walsh swam the lead leg of the relay, clocking 52.98 seconds, with Douglass following with a split of 52.55. Torri Huske, a graduate of Northern Virginia’s Yorktown High who competes for Stanford, and Simone Manuel swam the final two legs, with Manuel out-touching the Chinese team to secure the silver in an American-record time of 3 minutes, 30.20 seconds. Australia took the gold.

Douglass swam the anchor leg in the preliminaries. She won the 100 freestyle at the U.S. trials in June, but chose to drop it as an individual event in Paris.

It was the first Olympic medal for Walsh, a first-time Olympian. It is the second Olympic medal for Douglass, who won bronze in the 200 individual medley three years ago in Tokyo.

It was Walsh’s second record of the evening session. She posted an Olympic-record 55.38 in the semifinals of the 100 butterfly and owns the three fastest times in the event’s history.

In the other women’s final of the day, UVA alum Paige Madden placed sixth in the 400 free at 4:02.26. Madden was seeded sixth in the final after swimming a 4:03.34 in the morning preliminaries.

UVA juniors Emma Weber and Aimee Canny will be in action Sunday in the preliminaries. Weber will swim in the 100 breaststroke and Canny in the 200 free.

Crouse, U.S. field hockey team drop opener: Argentina, ranked second in the world, defeated the 13th-ranked United States field hockey team 4-1 at Paris’ Yves-du-Manoir Stadium in the first pool-play game for both.

Defender Leah Crouse, a former standout for Cox High, Duke and Maryland, made her first Olympic appearance for the U.S., which outshot Argentina 12-8. Crouse did not compile any statistics.

“We created far more chances than we have during my tenure, but failed to convert and were then punished for errors we made,” U.S. coach David Passmore said.

Rocio Sanchez scored three minutes into the second period, and Agustina Gorzelany scored on a penalty corner for a 2-0 lead.

The Americans scored three minutes into the third quarter as Ashley Sessa converted off passes from Megan Valzonis and Maddie Zimmer.

Argentina took command on goals by Julieta Jankunas late in the third quarter and Zoe Diaz early in the fourth.

The U.S. will play No. 7 Spain at 7:15 a.m. Monday in their second pool game.

Jacksonville (47-50, 12-10) led 5-0 after the second inning, getting to Tides starter Cade Povich early. Jhonny Pereda hit a two-run single in the first inning and Jose Devers’ double and three Tides errors capped a three-run second.

Povich settled down and pitched six innings, allowing all five runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked one.

Luis González (5-2) pitched a scoreless top of the seventh to earn the victory. Jacksonville reliever Anthony Maldonado (4-4) gave up four runs in a third of an inning.

Jacksonville’s 5-0 lead stood until the bottom of the sixth, when Norfolk’s Kyle Stowers hit a three-run homer for his 18th long ball of the season. Maverick Handley and Hudson Haskin both singled to reach base.

The Tides finished with only five hits, but got the most out of two big swings.

In the nightcap, Jacksonville starter Shaun Anderson (2-1) tossed six scoreless innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Reliever Emmanuel Ramirez threw a scoreless seventh to complete the shutout.

Norfolk starter Tucker Davidson (3-4) pitched well, giving up one run on five hits in six innings. He got no run support, though.

Coby Mayo and Vavra had the Tides’ lone hits.

The teams are scheduled to play a 12:05 p.m. game Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Orioles selected the contract of Tides right-hander Chayce McDermott, and he made his MLB debut Wednesday night against the Miami Marlins on the road. He allowed three runs on five hits in four innings, striking out three and walking two in 82 pitches.

The Orioles rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning to ensure McDermott wouldn’t take the loss, but Miami won the game 6-3.

Baltimore also optioned reliever Bryan Baker to the Tides and designated right-hander Jonathan Heasley for assignment.

The Orioles plan to add Tides second baseman Connor Norby to their taxi squad in case infielder Jorge Mateo has to go on the injured list. Mateo suffered an elbow injury in Tuesday night’s game.

As Vice President Kamala Harris moves to take his place as the Democratic standard-bearer, Biden’s accomplishments remain very much at risk should Republican Donald Trump prevail.

How Biden’s single term and his decision to step aside are remembered will be intertwined with Harris’ electoral result in November, particularly as the vice president runs tightly on the achievements of the Biden administration.

Biden will have an opportunity to make a case for his legacy — sweeping domestic legislation, renewal of alliances abroad, defense of democracy — on Wednesday night when he delivers an Oval Office address about his decision to bow out of the race and “what lies ahead.”
