Suffolk firefighters rescued a worker who fell some 30 feet into a sand pit on Thursday afternoon.
The worker was operating an excavation machine — moving sand at a private company’s operation on Audubon Road — when he stepped off his machine at about 4:15 p.m. and accidentally fell into the pit, according to a news release from Suffolk Fire Chief Michael J. Barakey.
The man was injured in the fall, and couldn’t get back out.
Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews used ladders to get down into the pit to give the man medical care, Barakey said. Another crew set up an anchor and rigged up a “haul system” to “raise the operator from the bottom of the pit.”
The man was removed at about 5:06 p.m. and taken to a local hospital where he was being treated for “moderate injuries.”
