In Portsmouth, voters will elect three City Council members, five school board members, and the mayor in the November general election.
The deadline to file for the Nov. 5 election was June 18.
Eleven candidates will compete for three at-large open seats on council, so the three candidates with the most votes will win election. Candidates include council incumbents De’Andre A. Barnes and Mark M. Whitaker, with challenges from William Smith “Bill” Dodson Jr., Sharon D. Anderson, Bruce G. LaLonde, Yolanda C. “Edmonds” Thomas, Davy Smith III, Malinda A. Johnson, Kathryn W. “Kitty” Bryant, Mia N. Phillips and Kelvin E. Turner.
Both Mayor Shannon E. Glover and Vice Mayor Lisa L. Lucas-Burke will face off for a four-year term as mayor. Portsmouth resident Harold S. Carothers III has also declared a run for mayor.
A total of five at-large seats are up for grabs on the school board. The seven candidates include incumbents Irene S. Boone, Ingrid P. Whitaker and Vice Chair LaKeesha S. “Klu” Atkinson, as well as Arnette D. “Love” McSwain, Jaclyn T. “Jackie” Walker, Lateacia A. Sessoms and Kendall C. Bradshaw.
The races are nonpartisan.
