Man dies after Norfolk motorcycle crash on Granby Street https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/29/motorcyclist-dead-after-crash-in-norfolk/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 17:53:04 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7273426 Norfolk police said a man died after a motorcycle hit a car early Sunday morning.

In a post on X, Norfolk police said the call for the crash came in just after 5 a.m. at the 7200 block of Granby Street, near the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Emergency services pronounced a man, who has not been identified, dead at the scene.

Police said the motorcyclist’s identity will be released once next of kin has been notified.

The motorcycle was traveling south on Granby when it struck a sedan that was making a turn, according to police. The driver of the sedan was not injured and remained at the scene.

No further information — such as whether alcohol or speed were factors in the crash — has been made available as of Monday evening. The authorities haven’t said if any charges will be filed, but did say the crash is still under investigation.

Pair of manatees spotted in the Hague in Norfolk https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/26/pair-of-manatees-spotted-in-the-hague-in-norfolk/ Fri, 26 Jul 2024 18:49:09 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7270239 Two manatees were spotted Thursday morning in the Hague, a relatively rare sight in the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk.

The sea cows were spotted about 10 a.m. by a Daily Press/Virginian-Pilot staff photographer, who said they were about 6-8 feet long, from the Hague’s pedestrian bridge. A small group of people stopped to watch as the pair floated in the Hague. Just three weeks ago, a manatee surprised passengers coming back to the dock from a dolphin-watching excursion in Rudee Inlet.

The Hague has 25-30 large water outfalls entering it, according to the Elizabeth River Project. Because of that, pollution affects the water quality of the Y-shaped inlet. Still, there’s plenty of diversity in the water. From cownose rays to dolphins and seals, creatures often associated with the ocean can sometimes be spotted along the Elizabeth River.

Shrimp and oysters tend to thrive, as well.

Research suggests manatee populations — more often associated with Florida waters — will gradually double over the next 50 years, and sea cows will move north as water temperatures warm in South Florida. This is due to threats to seagrass (manatee food) and a rise in “red tide,” a toxic form of algae, according to a 2017 report from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Swim advisory for Buckroe Beach in Hampton lifted https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/25/swim-advisory-issued-for-buckroe-beach-in-hampton/ Thu, 25 Jul 2024 17:37:48 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7269074 The swim advisory issued for Buckroe South and Buckroe Middle beaches in Hampton were lifted within about six hours of being issued on Thursday.

The advisory affected areas at the end of South Resort Road by the James T. Wilson Fishing Pier and the Buckroe Beach Park and pavilion. Samples collected on July 23, 2024, by the Hampton Health District showed that bacteria levels in the water exceeded the state water quality standard.

The Virginia Department of Health measures public waters regularly for enterococci bacteria during the warmer months. Enterococci bacteria are a group of organisms used to measure fecal contamination in recreational waters. While they do not cause illness, the health department reports that their presence is “closely correlated to the presence of other disease-causing organisms.”

People swimming or playing in waters with higher bacteria levels have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness, often caused by swallowing the water.

Signs were posted in the affected area

The advisory was issued Wednesday after tests showed that bacteria levels did not meet state water quality standards. Retested results show bacteria levels have returned to a safe level in water near the Neptune Statue and boardwalk in the popular tourist area.

Swimming prohibited in prominent part of Virginia Beach Oceanfront due to bacteria https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/24/prominent-section-of-virginia-beach-oceanfront-under-swim-advisory/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 18:30:58 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7267621 A swimming advisory has been issued for the Oceanfront area in Virginia Beach from 22nd Street to 37th Street after bacteria levels did not meet state water quality standards.

This includes water near the Neptune Statue and boardwalk in the popular tourist area.

During the advisory, swimming and wading are prohibited.

Beachgoing fun was spoiled for those seeking relief from the late July heat and humidity.

Jeff Lucas, 40, of Ohio, and his family had been swimming in the ocean when lifeguards ordered everyone out of the water. His son then dug a hole in the sand and his nephew fed potato chips to a flock of seagulls.

“We paid a lot for a vacation,” he said. “We’re just trying to make the best of the day.”

Some people walked along the water’s edge while others packed up their umbrellas and lumbered back to their hotel rooms.

Peter Dubois of Quebec walked several blocks south with his grandchildren to swim where it was allowed. But he was parked on 28th Street where they returned to spend the rest of the afternoon playing in the sand.

“The water looks the same down here as it did there,” Dubois said. “If the lifeguard wasn’t here to whistle, we’d be swimming.”

Lifeguard Benjamin Bermudez, 19, fielded questions from people asking why the water was off limits.

“Our job is just to keep people out of the water to keep people healthy and safe from any potential sicknesses the bacteria may cause,” he said.

The swim advisory will be lifted once levels drop below the standard level. Signage was posted in the affected areas.

Director, chief of staff and chief of surgery all out at Hampton VA Medical Center after investigation https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/24/director-chief-of-staff-and-chief-of-surgery-all-out-at-hampton-va-medical-center-after-investigation/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 15:59:43 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7267024 Major leadership changes are underway at the VA Medical Center in Hampton after an investigation by the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

The House committee launched an investigation after lawmakers said they met with people who work at the medical center in March to discuss the delivery of care after recent scrutiny.

Earlier this year, the House committee requested documents related to disciplinary actions against employees, patient safety reports related to the medical center’s surgical department and policy language on the medical center’s cleaning of exam and procedure rooms. The committee said they received credible complaints of employee retaliation, patient safety concerns and medical incompetence stemming from the Hampton Veterans Affairs facility and its surgical department. The allegations were brought by more than a dozen people.

As a result of the investigation, the committee announced it would replace its director, chief of staff and chief of surgery at the medical center, according to a statement from U.S. Rep. Jen Kiggans, the chair of the committee. The medical center will also address its anesthesiologist shortage, staff morale and allegations of retaliation. Other policy changes include increasing accountability in substandard care and ensuring medical facilities are properly cleaned and maintained.

Hampton’s Mallory Street Bridge traffic shift delayed https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/07/22/hamptons-mallory-street-bridge-traffic-shift-delayed/ Mon, 22 Jul 2024 11:49:07 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7264584 A traffic shift on Mallory Street Bridge, which was slated to start this past Friday, has been delayed by one week, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

VDOT said in an email late Friday that work on pedestrian walkways still needed to be finished, and weather conditions created further delays. Once walkways are completed, traffic on Interstate 64 will be diverted onto the new segment of the Mallory Street Bridge in Hampton as part of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project.

Switching to the new segment will allow traffic to continue while crews demolish the rest of the old bridge and rebuild it.
